I'm a total 40k noob and am looking to put together an Imperial Guard army I've got a 500 point list written up, but since I'm still unsure of all the rules and finer nuances of 40k I'll run it though here before deciding on anything. The idea I had behind this would be a defense-centric army centered around its heavy weapons teams.

Junior Officer
1x Guardsmen w/ Frag
1x Guardsmen w/ Frag, MasterVox (+20 pts or +25 pts?)
1x Heavy Weapons Crew w/ Autocannon
Close Order Drill (can I even have this on the HQ squad?)

Should I drop the Vox's from the two squads without heavy weapon crews so I can upgrade the HQ's heavy weapon crew to a lascannon for more anti-tank firepower or leave it as is?

Squad 2-1 is the designated anti tank squad. If you choose to give a squad frag or krak grenades, don't you have to give it to every model? Or can you only give them to half?

You do give it to all, but why not just save yourself the points and give them a lascannon and meltagun?

Make it HVY Bolters and Lascannons instead.

As much as I love autocannons, missile launchers would be a better pick if just so that you will have some defense against the heavy vehicle that an opponent will somehow manage to squeeze into his 500 point list. Counting on one un-mounted BS3 melta gun probably isn't a good idea.

Close Order Drill is probably extraneous. If their main function is to cover heavy weapons teams, the last thing that they should be doing is trying to melee. Use massed firepower to bring down choppy opponents before they reach your llines. Light Infantry, Sharpshooters, or Chameleoline would be better doctrines to take.

If you're playing 500 and you're fighting something where lascannons would be better than autocannons, your opponent's list is unbalanced as fuck.

If you're ever in a situation where you can use Krak grenades, chances are you'll already have blown that tank up with a melta gun instead. If not, charge it instead for much hilarity

Agreed. Missile launchers are better for a small list. They can kill tanks and are still decent against infantry.

Vox are of no use unless you have a high-leadership leader (Like an HSO with a commisar's gun on the temper).

Your Platoon Sub-HQs are useless, try pimping them up with melta/plasma and use the drop troop doctrine to slay those monstrous / vehicules with a rather cheap suicide squad.

Oh and think about sentinels. Scout rule (Outflank) and heavy flamers got me rid of an harlequin squad rather easily.

Close order drill makes you vulnerable to templates so beware.

If you play well and choose what will die and what with live you might have an easier time.

I was under the impression you could only give it to models who have the grenades on their person. It has to be represented on the actual model.

Alright, so scrap the grenades and vox casters, replace autocannons with heavy bolters and/or missile launchers, pimp out the platoon command squads, and chose a different drill?

I chose Close Order Drill initially because it was the only one I could afford. All those grenades and vox's ate up a lot of points.
