What weapons are Kobolds unable to weild due to being tiny? Also, how do I go about designing a balanced weapon? I kind of want to make some sort of post-apocalypse mod? Does Toady read /tg/?

Moats filled with water/magma can't be walked over.

If the water freezes in the winter, on maps that freeze, then yes they can be walked over.

If the monsters can swim (most can to an extent) poor moat design might make it possible for them to be swum.

remove the ramps to the z level higher than your main entrance. then you will have an inner courtyard, and a moat that nothing can cross.

If you want a really cheap defense, build a lifting bridge in front of your fortress entrance. Bridges are indestructible and so serve as perfect walls.

Failing that, traps. Cage traps can catch most things (kobolds and HFS are exempt under most circumstances.). If you feel particularly sadistic, hook up a hall full of 10-per-square spike traps to a single lever, have it set to "Pull repeat" and you have an instant mincer (unlike other lever-activated mechanisms, spike traps trigger instantly, so repeatedly toggling the lever will have it continually extending/retracting the spikes).

also, if you want you can leave some ramps and wall off a section above so you can station troops above your main entrance. like i have done here.
