Probabilities don't really work like that, however:
3d6 has a mean of 10.5, like the d20.
2d6 has a mean of 7, and the d12 has a mean of 6.5.
Does that answer your question?

So a 3d4 is more like a d12 in that regards. However, regardless of the mean, the chance of getting each possible outcome is different. The more dice you add the more likely you will roll the mean instead of one of the extremes. Is that close to right?

Yes, values will congregate towards the mean. In a sense, you get more average rolls.

Right. That's the reason GURPS uses 3d6. The most commons die, and you get a Gauss Curve, what approximates you to the reality of probabilities

Sounds like a smart probablility curve to me. 9-12 are the "normal" result. You should do a task normaly well for your skill level far more often than you flubb it or do exceptionally.
