So I'm learning to paint my gunpla and I'm moving on to paint. Now I'm trying to hand paint this one part on my HGUC Guncannon, and I sprayed the color I used to spray paint on the runner and I'm currently trying to paint over it. The problem though is that it's not really solid looking. It looks all runny and what not and I haven't even thinned it. I've heard of a few people use model masters and do this just fine, so maybe I'm just doing it wrong. I also tried coating it with a flat finish to no avail. Any guides on handpainting that I might find useful or tips from the lovely plamo community that I know is here? All help is appreciated

I've always spray painted everything. Model airplanes, simple rubber toys that needed detail. I made this for painting tips. I just used the Guncannon as an example. Want me to recreate the thread and make it so it doesn't offend anyone?

I use started to use model master acrylic to replace my aging old testor's emenal paint. I don't thin them while painting and they still look fine after apply 3 - 7 coats of paint depend on the color of the plastic. 3 coats don't usually start to cover up the original plastic color unless you got primer, which i don't use too often.

Does it usually require multiple coats though? It's kinda weird to see some people who use multiple coats and then the ones who can just get by with one. Does it just boil down to the thickness of the paint?
And would paint stick better to a Gloss finish or a flatte finish?

depends.
Enamel paint are so thick that you should have no problem putting the color on with one coat. But for most plastic kits I know of, because the surface is too smooth for the paint to stick well on you need more than one coat of paint for acrylic unless you spread paint them on from can spread paint that is lacquer.
And using a primer does decrease the number for the numbers of coat.

My usual tactic when painting is applying a base coat of either white or black, depending on what colours are going over it, then applying a couple coats of whatever colours i want.

for a nice metallic silver, i start with a thin coat of black for a base, go over that with a coat of dark metallic silver, then i dry brush over that with a coat of light metallic silver. this creates a nice depth of colour.

something i have yet to try is to do the coats of black and a dark or light metallic paint, then do a full dry brushing of a colour over top of that... it should potentially create a nice coloured metallic finish.

and for doing gunpla or plamo kits, i usually paint the base coats before putting them together, then go over them with the next coat after everything is built.

Just one last question. So I painted something with a can of Rustoleum metallic. Looks fantastic. Now I have this last little detail to fill in with some yellow acrylic. Do I topcoat and then paint over that and add topcoat? Or what do?
