I'm guessing you didn't have insurance on them. Also, if it was unlocked, does someone else have your key or was someone picking locks? The mailmen never unlock the individual boxes, they have a master key to flip the entire thing open.

Sounds like you might live in a bad area and i'm sorry you got screwed. The worst story I have is...

Both were shipped via RSAL. Both arrived at the SAME office and were processed by customs.

So yeah, sometimes the postal service doesn't make sense.

I used to work in customs, and oh my god some of these guys were fucking kleptos using the 'OPENED BY CUSTOMS' sticker as an excuse to look in packages for stuff worth 'losing in the mail'.

One guy made off with someone's brand new laptop (he stuffed some reams of paper into the empty box before he taped it back up) , someone else made off with some animu figures (forget which, but I know they were pretty hard to find even then and super expensive). Some other guy didn't even bother ripping open packages, he used the xray scanner, claimed it was contraband, took it into the contraband room, and later when everyone else went home he'd load that shit into his car.

Naturally, I reported all this to my supervisor but I always figured he was in on some of that too since nothing was ever done to even look into it.

Just saying, if your shit goes missing in the mail and it's coming from overseas, more likely than not someone in customs stole it and hawked it on ebay.

Nope.

Unless you have bought insurance, the post office is liable for nothing. They guarantee only that the package will be delivered and do not guarantee what condition it arrives in.

Although it's tangentially related at best, I ordered a Blu-Ray from Amazon Japan last week and the RIGHT shipping path DHL takes is Osaka>Hong Kong>Cincinatti>Seattle>Alberta. I think they sent it like 13,000 miles to get somewhere 5,100 miles away.

Just last month, I won this fucker on eBay for a pittance. Figuring sellers always take a while to ship things out, I promptly forgot all about it for a few weeks. After a while, realizing I still hadn't gotten it, I look up the shipping info and find out the package had supposedly been delivered almost two weeks earlier. I remember being home that day when the mail arrived (special event that eve, that's why I remember), and package wasn't there. Never showed up either. When I submit an official complaint via the USPS site complaint form, I get the response "lol idk, package waz delivered." No more info than I was able to get from the automated system - no confirmation of address delivered to, no checking with the carrier or local office, nothing. Fucking worthless.

Today, in my mailbox was my mail and also the mail of the next house over. Fucking idiot local carrier.

Honestly /toy/-bros, I work for an insurance company and even the retired usps guys know shit gets mis-delivered all the time. Their still better than ups though. Maybe not quite as good as fedex, but close and unless it's a grail the price difference isn't worth it.

Oh boy, helpful neighbors. Had my elderly neighbor take a package off my porch, she didn't remember that it was collecting dust in her garage until over a month later. She also decided that a nice time to come over would be 5:30 in the morning.

The really bad experiences I've had have all been due to "helpful" mailmen, though. So many packages left outside in the hedges, two run over because they were left in the driveway, where they can't be seen at all, and one wedged inside the door (great, rather than leave the package vulnerable on the porch, go ahead and show robbers that we left the front door open, that should help).
Also, one guy thought that tossing a package behind the hedges and covering it with leaves would help. I got bit by a copperhead when I picked it up.

Not too common. Some countries are extremely low tech and full of corruption. We are fairly high tech and there isn't too much abuse going on. Of course there is always exceptions. That's why it's always best not to bring attention to your package in any way. If someone thinks something valuable is in it the chances of theft increase dramatically.

For some retarded reason, New Zealand Post assigns a NEW tracking number to any parcel that arrives in the country, but doesn't in any way tell you what it is. So the tracking ends at "arrival in country" then shows up sometime later with its shiny new totally useless tracking number.

Does anyone know how long packages usually take to reach the eastern side of the us form germany? I bought some dvds from a person on figure.fm and haven't gotten anything after a month. How often does USPS re-use tracking numbers? I ordered something from BBTS, tracking I got was from a letter delivered in mid-March. I emailed, they say USPS re-uses tracking numbers and it should get updated once rescanned. It hasn't updated yet, it's been 3 weeks now.

It's not going to update but don't worry, it should still arrive, if not BBTS is pretty bro. When this mistake happens it almost never updates. I had this happen to me once and called them in a panic, they said it would update, it didn't. The next day I got the package.

If you send out a package make absolutely sure they scan it in so the tracking number is "active". Sometimes they are lazy and decide they don't want to do that. Specifically request it if you don't see them scan it in.

Luckily my local post office isn't a gigantic clusterfuck so the people there are nice, do their job properly and don't need to be asked. I've heard of some places giving people a hard time over it though.

I've seen complaints on eBay forums regarding it. However, eBay is the buyers friend even in cases where the buyer is clearly scamming or lying their asses off. It's hard for a seller to ever win a dispute on eBay. You are a lot less likely to get away with such nonsense with PayPal or standard credit card processing.

Also, the thing you have to understand is they will scan the package once it's delivered. The tracking is essentially worthless but unless something goes horribly wrong (someone doesn't do their job) they WILL scan it upon delivery. Then the system will finally update.

If they don't scan it on delivery I suggest you call the USPS and get that guy fired by complaining up a storm. The last thing we need is lazy mailmen who don't scan packages upon delivery encouraging scammers to screw over people.
