I have no job, I go to art school and I'm afraid I'll never get one.

I'm moving in with my girlfriend who I love to death and I'm afraid our relationship will be doomed

I'm stressed about graduating,

etc. etc.

And somehow I believe buying a BJD will make it better. I want it so bad. But alas, if I bought it my girlfriend would be mad at me. How the fuck do I justify buying a doll right now? How do I make $800 fast?

Am I the only one that buys toys to comfort themselves?

This, pretty much. But yeah, here's my two cents. Go out and get yourself a shitty job for now. Grocery store, Target/Walmart/whatever, art commissions, you get the picture. It's obviously not going to be a permanent thing, but it'll provide you with some extra scratch in the meantime.

As for the BJD, don't do it for now. You're not in a situation to be tossing $600+ wantonly, and if your girlfriend's gonna get mad at you for it, that'll add relationship troubles to your pile of stress. What I'd recommend would be a compromise for now - maybe buy a Figma/Revoltech/LEGO set/something cool that you've always wanted. Throwing down $40-$80 is much better than throwing down $600+, and it'll give you a similar rush of comfort. Once you have a temporary job in place, put aside a bit of your earnings each week (maybe $10-$20), and wait for it to build up. If you still want the BJD by the time you've amassed the cost in this method, then go for it, but it'll take enough time for the impulse to wear off.

But seriously dude I have a job (and a semi-decent one at that) and buying an $800 toy is something I wouldn't even think of doing right now. Saving up money little by little is always a good idea or buying something cheap on impulse is good. Personally I buy Gunpla for this reason, I get a decent but cheapish model/figure and 6-8 hours later when I'm done assembling it I generally forget what I wanted to buy earlier. I'm an idiot like that.

$800 is a mindboggling amount of money to spend on something as blatantly non-essential as a doll. I mean I've made fun of people who waste such money to get a purebred cat or a dog, and both of those are going to give you way more value for your money than a freaking doll. I spent less on my desktop computer, and I've used it for work, so it has pretty much paid itself by now. I'm pretty sure that my entire toy collection didn't cost $800 put together. I understand you have an expensive taste, but that calls for high income. Learn to accept the realities of life before they bite you in the ass.

And I buy toys sometimes for comfort, but never anything that high, and I've been able to spend my money wisely by doing so. In fact, one of my comfort toys is one of my favorites; Clayface from Batman.
Enough about me though, just think logically through the situation and talk things over with your girlfriend on expenses.

People are going to tell you many things based on their own experiences, but you have to decide whether or not those things apply to you. Don't just react because you don't have a job. I know people with blown off limbs who live just fine.

Instead of worrying about your impending future, focus on what's going on now. Focus on sleep. Focus on a project. Focus on anything that you feel is important and requires your time. Do not react. Buying a doll out of stress is a reaction, not a gift. If you need a job, find a job. The beauty of jobs is that while you may need to get one out of necessity, you can always quit. It's temporary, just like your situation. You are graduating with 4 years of time, patience, energy, and resolve to apply and temper however you want. A big art job doesn't make a good artist. An artist takes what they have and make the most out of it. Don't give yourself a time limit. Focus on what you can do NOW. The key to a brilliant future is living in the present. Draw what you want, take care of your own priorities, and don't give up. You're a good artist. YOU just have to believe it.

The BJD hobby has been pretty constant for the last ten years. it just so happens that seldomly someone wanders in from another forum onto /toy/ and starts a thread. Recently moreso than most. I wouldn't really call it a fad, but I've owned BJD for almost ten years now.

They don't typically -rise- much in value unless they're limited edition. BUT they keep their prices well and usually sell for the same amount as long as you don't fuck them up with sharpies or some shit.

BJD aren't much different than any other toys- it's just instead of eight $100 lego sets, you get one doll. instead of a bunch of figma you get a doll.

People post a bunch saying they have $150+ in monthly preorders repeatedly, how is that different than getting one doll a year? especially considering $800 is very high-end for a standard BJD, and the average doll will linger around $300-500 depending...
