That my friend is bullshit. McFarlane didn't do it for the reasons you are insinuating, they just didn't give a fuck about Kojima's wishes and cared about marketing their toys more. There is nothing noble about it, they wanted profits. It's the least noble of reasons to spoil something especially when being given the opportunity to profit on a hot property.
Also, video game critics know better than to piss off publishers and developers. They will lose access to previews, interviews and more importantly advertising money. That's why a request not to spoil story elements will be honored.
