They're rigged. They've taken the grippy pads off the end, and consequently the claw barely picks up anything. The idea is that it falls out once the claw gets to the top, and it's supposed to bounce into the prize hole, thus requiring 'skill'. They say this on a dozen signs put up around the place.
The problem is that half of the prizes are so large/heavy that the crane doesn't even pick them up. You can't tell until you play.
However, they're not total scum. If you spend more than $20 at a machine, you can play for free until you win something.
I played once, won once (by pure fluke), and never again.
