Hey gang. I've been on a toy customization kick lately. I started out with my black suit Spidey that some of you may recall from within the last couple weeks (Replaced Spidey's non-swivel feet with Banshee's and painted them) results are pic related.

However, I don't think I'm satisfied. When I look at this Spider-Man figure, I am reminded of the ninjas from Mortal Kombat, particularly the MK3/UMK3/Trilogy style ninjas (Very slim and athletic.)

They don't make good MK figures, so I'm strongly thinking about making one out of this guy (Or the spare that I bought.) At first, I wanted Sub-Zero (My favorite) but it might be much easier to do Noob Saibot for obvious reasons (Also a favorite of mine.)

Anyone have any experience with sewing for action figures? I was strongly considering using cloth instead of sculpting for the costume, and just doing a "mask" for the eyes. Opinions?

Also, I've been thinking for a while about how to make super poseable hands. I recall a tutorial on how to make Symbiote tendrils for Carnage/Venom by using some wire dipped in some grip-making rubber gel. Could this method be used for hands, you think?

Well, can you sew?

Sewing for people and making it look professional is hard enough, sewing for a small doll, now that's a fucking challenge.

The pieces of cloth are tiny, the seams you're working with have to be SO precise it's not funny, and seam allowance? Shit man, you don't get one.

By all means try it out, but be very ready for a fuckton of frustration.

So far as fabrics go, you don't want stiff fabrics. Make sure you've got the thinnest and most pliable fabric you can because stiff fabrics look like ASS when made into little clothes unless you have absolute godlike skills. The exceptions would be for items that are supposed to be stiff looking of course.

And if you are looking for a stiff look to the fabric (I'm thinking Sub zero's shoulder things), you could also think about using interfacing on a thinner, weaker fabric. For those who don't know, you can iron interfacing onto a fabric to make it stiffer and a bit thicker. You can also fuse it or just sew it on.
The good thing about it OP, if you can easily make template garments with interfacing for cheap, then use the finished facing product to make a pattern/template for your cloth.
Hey OP, did you ever email Jin on his offer for Havok feet? Did he ever respond?
Also OP, can you detail what you did to your spidey transplant feet so that I may copy the process?

People sew clothes for 1/6th scale (barbie) sizes all the time. But as you may have noticed, barbie clothes always look a little askew. That's because this poster>>341950

If you want my advice, cheat cheat cheat. If you -must- use fabric, don't sew it for god's sake. Either glue it or use polyester and melt it together. It's kinda the same idea as a heat sealed seam.

I'm an IATSE dresser. It's a call union, so I work in all different types of theater and performance art. Dramatic plays, musicals, fashion shows, stand up comedy, what-ever-on-ice, anything like that. I'm on /toy/ every single day though Valjean, if you ever want to know more.

Enough about me though. I was thinking about the hand part of OP's idea. I don't think it will work. If I -had- to have pose able hands, I would do what Japanese toys do and sculpt/steal a few hands in the poses you want, put them on pegs, and drill holes into the wrists, same as figma, revoltech, MMS, or any of them.

I just used a blow dryer on the leg area (One minute is enough) to soften it, and popped the legs off of both figures (Spidey and Banshee) then, before attaching the legs to Spidey, I used a mixture of light blue, dark blue, and black acrylic paint until I matched the color as best I could, I painted about two layers on each leg and then heated the figure (Not the legs, I was afraid of the heat affecting the paint) to soften the holes and popped the legs in.

I ended up scuffing up the legs, so I retouched them after the figure was whole. Really easy. If I were you, though, I'd try to find a figure with more articulate legs. Banshee's doesn't have the toe joints, and it looks a little too "bootesque."

Also, Jin and I discussed it, and he was happy to help me out with the legs. I gave him my information and haven't heard back from him since. I figure I'll either get legs or anthrax in the mail soon.

That's helpful. Maybe it's best I avoid fabrics. I'm no good at sewing. Are there any recommended fabrics/glues to use for a project like this?

Let me be more specific for you:

Sub-Zero (As in MK II onward) is one of my favorites.

Sub-Zero (MK1, and Noob Saibot) is also a favorite.

Out of the two, the original Sub-Zero (Noob Saibot) is my favorite character, but I also enjoy playing as modern Sub-Zero (The original's brother).

Did you try a fine scale sandpaper like someone had suggested?
