I'm in Oslo for a few days, what should I do while i'm there? and what should I not do or avoid?

also, I've been trying to book tickets on NSB but you need a norwegian phone number to do it online, is it even worth booking the tickets in advance, or will I be able to get the minipris tickets about 2-3 days ahead, booking while i'm there?

sorry for my multiple hours late reply. I'm leaving June 30 to Oslo, so arrive July 1 probably midday. I'll be in Oslo for 3 days, then taking a train to Stavanger, for three days, then a boat to Bergen, also for 3 days, a plane by the looks of it, to Trondheim, a train (most likely) to Bodø for 1-2 days, off to lofoten for a little while and i'll just island hop, return to Bodø to fly into Oslo, then my flight leaves on the 15th :(

are you only gonna be in Oslo and Bergen? where else are you going/how long?

It'll be summer but the temperature varies alot between towns. Oslo will be alright, hitting highs possibly even in the 20's, whereas Bodø will be considerably colder, especially with the wind.

1: Oslo is the worst city in Norway and is the worst capital in Europe (maybe chisnau is worse, but i doubt it.)
2.Plains are for the most part cheaper than trains if you buy your tickets in advance
3.It's a bit of a waste to go all the way to bodø and then stop there and not go further north.
4.the railway from Trondheim to Fauske/Bodø is shit and slow as all hell.
5.The weather will be unpredictable and it might be cold (bot not freezing)
6.The west coast is somwhat toursitrappie but it's a nice place.
7.Cant think of anything here

CityMaps2Go or ForeverMap are good offline maps for the iphone specifically in europe. One of them installs all the local wikipedia and user inputs as well so that should help with locating sights to see. Both show your location as well.

See the peace museum in Oslo. It is pretty cool to see. Holmenkollen is pretty cool as well.

If going out to clubs or pubs I would always recommend pre-gaming first. The Locals do it because of the high prices too so don't feel like a fool.

If you are staying at a hostel they usually have options to go out and do things during the day and especially at night.

Other than that I would say go to Geilo in the Winter. I LOVE that place.

Lived there for the majority of my life thus far.

Chek out Polaria,the cable cart up the mountain, dog sleding is popular with the tourists i hear,go a little out of town and hope to see the borealis (you can see it inside the town but not as well),
Highest bar pr capita among all the Nordic towns if you can afford it.

pic related, grabbing oslo-bergen train on july 22nd, spending 3 weeks in and around bergen, taking two weeks to leave norway by bicycling along the southern coast. Between August 10th and August 24th, we cross Mosterhamn, Haugesund, Stavanger, Egersund, Flekkefjord, Mandal, Kristiansand, Arendal, Porsgrunn, Sandefjord.

Its not that bad, visually. The problem persists, but its happening less openly these days, which I guess is a potentially bad development.
A few years ago you would be offered pills while walking out of the station in mid day. That was unflattering.

I'm obviously whining as a victim of racism here. Ultimately young students who study are the ones suffering from it professionally. My face doesn't have typical prominent Moroccan traits, but I still hope mentioning my origins won't be an issue. Having to hide such a thing annoys me greatly.

I commented a bit earlier on this thread, but I might as well piggyback on it to solicit suggestions. This obviously won't be my first time in Norway -- I was in only Oslo the first time and mostly Bergen the second time (the trips involved going to other countries as well). This time, I have only ten days in July, and it's going to be mostly Tromso -- 5 days in Tromso, about 3 in Trondheim, maybe 1 day in Lillehammer, and then the last in Oslo. I'm flying from Tromso to Trondheim due to a lack of time -- it appears to take forever to get to Trondheim via boat/bus and train.

Anyway, while in the far north, I plan on taking a day trip via express boat to Harstad and maybe a bus trip over to Sommaroy. The rest of the time will probably be aimless walking, hiking, bike riding, and going to the top of the mountain that overlooks the town. I might try tandem paragliding. In Trondheim, there's obviously more walking and hiking, and I was thinking of a day trip to Kristiansund by boat. Please let me know of any "must do" activities that I'll be missing. Also, is Lillehammer worth seeing?

Also, what are my chances of catching a glimpse of some reindeer and moose by just walking around? I hear in some areas, the reindeer are pretty tame, and you can pet them.

if you want reindeer they are pretty much all around Finnmark, because of the Sami.

They get big payouts from the Norwegian, Finnish and possible Swedish and Russian governments (probably not russian) because their land was 'taken' from them, but in reality the inhabitants that now make up those countries have been working together with the sami for ages, and the sami had every opportunity in history to join with the vikings that later made up what was to become Norway. they were never discriminated or slaughtered etc.
there is however increasing racism towards them in some parts of Norway, its not too bad, but one half-sami guy was saying how he got called offensive names walking around Tromsø once. I can only imagine what it's like for black people.

No that is not true. There where attempts to destroy Sami culuture right up untill the 1980s even forced sterilization as late as 1972 in Sweden. But there hasnt been any sort of masacres like with the indians.

i met a girl from norway once. she was from oslo, but she was 3/4 sami, as i recall. though she didn't embrace that identity, at least before us... for whatever reasons. it only came up because we were asking about sami and then she goes "well, actually..."

anyway, she had light brown hair and blues eyes.
