Should I take the bus or the train, and what should I do in amsterdam? Id love to just do some street photography and get a few beers. Any tips on good streets for this?

oh wow. Does this mean I have to take precausions for arriving back on schiphol in time for my flight? Will busses and trains be crouded and delayed?

I'd definitely take some precautions. Previous year, the trains in and around Amsterdam were cancelled and delayed for several hours (people were walking on the rails etc.). They want to avoid such a scenario this year of course, but you never know what's going to happen with all those crowds.

Yeah, it's basically out bigger outside holiday, maybe next to "carnaval", but I don't celebrate that, living in the north. There's parades and markets and all kinds of crap like that. Very fun in a large city, if you're into it, but I'd plan myself to be back in the airport at least 2 hours before, so you have room for error. Keep in mind, especially in the centre of the city, there will be no traffic whatsoever, because of the people. No busses either, and trains will be packed. The best you can hope for is a bus on the outskirts of the celebrations. I'm not 100% sure if this goes for cities as well, but here in the north busses are free on this day (or only 1 euro for any trip, but it kinda depends), so again, it'll be packed.

Honestly, if you plan it right, you can have a lot of fun. If you plan it wrong, or hell, you're unlucky, it'll be very frustrating.

Small peice of advice: if you'd want to avoid any delays or extreme crowds; don't go to Amsterdam Central station.. Instead, take a local train to Amsterdam Duivendrecht, Transfer to Metro 54 to Central Station and exit on stations Nieuwemarkt. It'll be a short walk to the actual centre, without the hassle of having to mow throught the crowd entering Amsterdam through Central Staiton, wich the rest of us will do.

From there, you'll be able to reach the Dam square. There is also an open air festival thing at Museumplein, but that will be difficult to reach from Schiphol, very crowded and most of the activity's will commence at the end of the day..

What he said. Although I don't suspect the train between Central station and Schiphol will be having any problem. Just calculate your time right.

But lucky you, it's one of the most fun public holidays here. Definitely forget about doing anything touristy. Just walk around, have a few beers. Make sure to get something orange for the hell of it.

It'll be very busy though but generally in very good spirit. And honestly, it's got fuck all to do with patriotism, it's just a good excuse to drink copious amounts of beer.
