For the first month I was here I would sometimes cover my face with a scarf and hat just so people would stop staring at me. If you are in the touristy areas no one will give you a second look, but there are many places where some people may never have seen a white person outside of a movie screen. So yes, in those areas you probably will cause a stir.
I teach english, probably much the same as your friend. I'm very lucky to work a few hours in the evenings and have the rest of my life to myself, and of course at less than a dollar a meal, there are no concerns about money. I must admit though, Vietnamese food, whilst tasty (everyone I know loves it but me.. its alright I guess) is not made with the same philosophy as western food, and I am constantly craving the shitty takeaway I used to eat back in New Zealand. They just don't do anything the same here, sometimes its nausiatingly alien. That is my only real irk, I'm really grateful to be living in this beautiful city.
