I am planning on moving to New Zealand from Canada this upcoming July. I have my sights set on moving to the north side, Auckland. Currently I am looking for a few questions to be answered.

What is the cost of food in NZ? Generally, I am not looking for specifics.

What are some good websites I can check for places to live in? (Renting an apartment preferably)

This is a question to anyone who lives in NZ or has been. I plan on being there for July, August, September, October, November, December. What should I do/go see while I am there?

You're wasting your time in Auckland. Wellington is a much nicer city to be living in. Currently living in the south island but I come from Wellington. Auckland is a shittily busy city, good for business but awful for living. Food isn't too expensive, though dairy is at the moment (4NZD for 2L of milk). I wouldn't know how to compare prices of food to other countries, but I can say that a Big Mac costs about 6NZD ha. If you can do it (and I strongly recommend you do), get to south island, which is much more attractive. In particular, Nelson is a beautiful relaxation town, and Queenstown is a very popular adventure tourist hot spot. One of our biggest cities, Christchurch, has recently suffered greatly to two large earthquakes, so infrastructure there is a little shaky (excuse the pun), but they are getting back on their feet. Bungee jumping, jet boating, zorbing, etc. are typical tourist activities for NZ, and I guess that's because they are attractive. But obviously there's a lot more to our great nation - for scenery, a visit to our national parks is always fantastic, though PLEASE don't attempt mountain climbs if unexperienced/improperly equipped as we tend to have problems with tourists underestimating how sporadic our weather can be in the outdoors. Milford sound is a beautiful cruise, so is the Marlborough sounds which is between the north and south islands. Can't think of much else to recommend - try to visit our native attractions, i.e. go to wildlife sanctuaries for our stunning native birds and tuatara etc., as well as getting to grips with the Maori culture. Again, this is all pretty stereotypical touristy stuff but is so for a reason.
Oh, and swing by Dunedin to see a cool university, a chocolate factory and a great brewery ;)

Auckland sucks and is full of either foreigners or dick heads. Go to Wellington to live and visit other places with your spare time, like Dunedin or Christchurch. How old are you? That's probably one of the most important factors for deciding where to live.

Auckland is our largest and best city. Wellington is a boring hole, good only for someone with a political job. Dunedin is an oversized town, as is Hamilton, and don't even get me started on Christchurch (or whats left of it)

When I was flatting last year, I got by fairly well on $60 NZ/week. Ate like a king for $80, with steak every night etc etc.

You're not wrong in saying Auckland is the largest and best city. But that's its own downfall - large, and too fucking city-ish. Wellington at least has some kind of niceness to it that makes it a pleasant city to live in or visit.
You're right about the weather though - poor choice unfortuntely.

I live in NZ and the US, so I can only compare those. To answer your questions direct:

Food: more expensive than the US in terms of grocery. Especially fruit, veg, meat and dairy. Plenty of good restaurants to eat on $10-15 a plate. None under that though.

Website: already covered with Trademe.

What you should go/see: not Christchurch. It's a ghost town here. Unless you want to survey the wreckage, and even then, you only get to see pieces of it. Also for your consideration: Auckland - thinks it's New York, actually more like Chicago. Wellington - Portland/Seattle mix. Dunedin - depressing student shithole.

The entire country is very skippable imho, and I've lived here for 24 odd years. But hey, you'll probably see something in it.
