I'll be going to Tokyo for a week and staying at the Shinagawa Prince. Any advice on what to do or where to go? I'm planning on going a day trip to osaka and Kyoto too.

(my budget is $2000, transportation and lodging aside). The only issue I have is that I'm traveling with family, and I'm an Asian who dont know much Japanese.

There are day-trip tours that could be signed up at the youkoso japan site given by the Japan National Tourist Organization, any ideas if those are worth it? (i think its 3 hour trip with 2 guides, and $35 per person fee plus pay for guide's fee).

One more specific question: are there any onsen between Tokyo to Osaka that is foreigner friendly? (like its ok to wear bathing suits, or have english signs) I dont mean a full day at a ryokan type of onsen. Maybe Oedo Onsen Monogatari?

NEVER WEAR A BATHING SUIT IN AN ONSEN. Seriously, it makes you look like an ignorant foreigner and hurts your cause. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Get bare naked and enjoy yourself. No one is going to call you out on your penis size and who cares if they do? When will you EVER see these people again? Most places have English speaker staff (very little but basic is better than none). There are a bunch of Onsen that are in and out, no need to stay the day.

Remember, this is your trip. If you want to know what is what without playing the guessing game, get a guide. If you want to play the gaijin game, take a train to a random station, walk around, get lost, and just have fun! You can always find a way back to a subway line that can get you back to your hotel (especially since it's the Shinagawa Prince). The hotel is literally across the street. But the most important advise I can give is HAVE FUN. Japan is an intense and one of the most memorable places I have ever been. Keep and open mind and I can guarantee you will have an unforgettable experience

honestly the problem i have is this being a "family" trip I dont think its ok (being the person in charge of the trip) to just stumble-upon places. If I was on my own thats what I'd do.

So, what are good 'family' stuff to do? (family as in an old fashion parents with 'kids' in their 20s).

You could try Toei Uzumasa Eigamura (aka Toei Movie Land) in Kyoto: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3934.html
They have a museum there highlighting popular TV shows etc with a ton of props/replicas (i.e. every single Red Power Ranger's costume ever created), as well as a bunch of fun, county-fair type attractions + souvenirs.

Also, Dotonbori in Osaka is a must. It's a huge shopping/food area in Osaka city.

This advice however is coming from an 18yr old anon who went to Japan with friends and our "tour guides" were our Japanese peers who were hosting us. Those two ideas though are pretty safe bet for a "family" experience, assuming your 20 somethings enjoy a bit of goofiness and shopping.

really, nothing on Osaka? Btw, you should also check out the Osaka Castle if you're just making it a day trip. Possibly do the castle first and then Dotonbori for lunch. Also, time permitting, you should check out Kyoto's temples like Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion).
I didn't spend much time in Tokyo but going on a tour @ the Fuji Television building was pretty interesting as well.

If you post a rough itinerary we could probably help you out some more.

In my opinion you should skip Osaka and head straight to Kyoto. Osaka is just like Tokyo with a bit more industrial feel to it. Kyoto however is full of temples and other old buildings in their original form, because it wasn't bombed in WW2.
One day isn't really enough to see both of the cities, so I suggest you focus on Kyoto.

Also there's an onsen in Tokyo too: the Asakusa Onsen. It's kinda packed always, but it's popular with tourists so they are bit more understanding there. Or least I'd assume cause I never went there (full of turists, what more reason do you need?). But tell your family member to loosen up and let his cock hang out.

OP here. Thanks for all the help so far! As for Osaka we really are going there for the food (same with Kobe).
I'm still trying to shorten my list of things to see at the moment.

I do have a question about the JR lines: we are getting the week pass thing, but I can't figure out how the schedules work. Does anyone know when's the latest train from Osaka to Tokyo and also from Kyoto to Tokyo?

Then don't go to an onsen, or leave him/her behind. Besides, unless you have more then one person from each gender, it'll be boring for whoever is the only man/woman.

And please, wash yourself THOROUGHLY at the washing stations before you set foot in the main baths.
