Running Away

Hey,

I am really down in the dumps and only a freshmen in collage, i have always wanted to backpack around the world.

everyday i feel more like running away for a few months just to travel and do what ever i can.

i dont want to plan anything and only plan on buying a eurail ticket for a month, and live in hostles.

i just turned 18 and have No expierence with life outside my hometown in California.

Do you think i can manage? Any Tips? Should i leave? Help me

Man i feel completely the same, im 20, english, trapped at uni until July until i can go travelling i literally cant think of anything else. I know this sounds like some gay ass thing to say but i need to find myself ive never felt like ive belonged somewhere. ahh do watever u can to get travelling just make sure you always have enough money for emergencies and try go as long as possible, hitch hike, eat cheaply, get drunk have an adventure. You only live once.

pack a hammock, tarp, balnket. CHRON sleep lets you do anything. sleep in places where people wont find you - on top of buildings, highway underpasses IF they look uninhabited. if its dry, sleeping in ditches is fine.
dumpsters from grocery stores often have fruit/veggies that is still good. lol ye olde foode shoppe.

Then I look at the costs and see that it's not something I can do for another few months. Which really sucks when you want to get away so badly.

at 18 I think it's a good age to go explore. Make sure you don't just drop everything though. Finish your semester or your quarter or whatever system you're on, make sure to let the school know what your'e doing so when you come back you can pick things up again

There is another option available if you're willing to wait a couple years, and that's in a study abroad program. You have to have top grades for most of the good programs so that'll motivate you to do well in school.

The great thing about it is, if you go most anywhere in europe/asia, etc, you'll be able to have a new hub. From California, it's really difficult to go explore and that's why I understand your need to get out and see the world. If you were from belgium or somethng, you probably would have seen the neighboring countries by now.

So if you go study in London for example, you'll have weekends off of school and you'll be able to travel cheap with your friends. You're getting your studies done, traveling in foreign countries, and you're not putting your life on hold to go explore either. It's really a good way to travel. Likewise if you head to japan/korea/china, you'll be able to travel cheaply from there too. Although, never forget your vaccinations and all that, and if you're going to do this backpacking thing and haven't been out of california, drink only bottled water unless you're going to Norway or Sweden~

18 is grown up in most places. Just cause american kids are sheltered doesn't mean they shouldn't have the same experiences as everybody else their age.

Do you think it'd do this poor kid any good to feel trapped and bored here? Maybe he'll realize how good he has it and study when he gets back. It happens to plenty of people.

when i was 18, 3 days after 9/11 i traveled through malaysia, thailand, cambodia, vietnam, australia, and spain for awhile. you're not too young, but you will find that most of the other backpackers ARE older than you.

the thing is you're going to need money. i had 2 years of highschool job money saved, sold my car, and still eventually needed my parents help to fly me home lols

Great tips there fellow traveller. I'm 18 aswell and want to get the hell out of here asap.

However i've figured out its the best for me to finish my high school and get to a university first.

I have a 2 months summer which is pretty good if i want to travel.
I've been thinking of applying for a job in the states or canada. Last summer i was working in a warehouse in southern germany. It was pretty tough because of the new enviroment and language but still absolutely worth it.

By the way it's totally safe to drink tap water in some other countries aswell. Such as Finland.

If money is an issue, there are also grants and scholarships for going abroad, so it is pretty easy to go somewhere exotic for a year for free. Just remember that the deadline for these kinds of things are ASAP, as most of these programs are highly competitive. In a meantime, since you just started college and you feel oppressed, try joining a club or doing a recreational sport. Perhaps a change of Major is also in order...
