Sup /trv/. Ausfag here. My girlfriend, who travels, has some sort of New York fixation. She's been there, and loves that it's "alive", "busy", “energetic" and "charming". Also, Broadway. She also said "it’s clean, and people are nice", when I suggested London and Beijing. I don't know, in my head, New York is full of department store Santas, thugs, flashy billboards, smog, angry people and prostitutes. And things normal cities have. It's Home Alone 3 + Ghostbusters + Seinfeld to me. I haven't been there, so I have to ask. Frankly, it's neither an interesting place to go like Thailand, Egypt or Japan, nor somewhere I'd like to live like Ireland, California, Germany or Finland. There's no denying she's in love with it, and I'm cool with that. But I want to know why. We look at the same pictures and see different things - to me something is both hectic and bleak, and she thinks its some sort of urban paradise.

New York is a great place to visit, but a shit-tastic place to live, without even taking the bullshit high rent for even a slum.

The romance of any city, and romance in general i suppose, is fluff. Anyone that "falls in love" with a particular place is a cunt. It's a cool place to hang out, meet people, eat delicious foodies, and not sleep. I don't jack off to it at night though. Go where you want to go, not where someone wants to drag you. This is why i usually travel alone.

Im from New York. No prostitutes. Seinfeld wasnt filmed in new york it was filmed in California on sound stages that look like New York. To me it's an amazing place. I've lived there all my life and have traveled a lot and I still think its the greatest city in the world.

New York has a lot to offer since it's a massive city. There are tons of restaurants that span almost every type of food and price range. Aside from food, there are a lot of live performances like concerts, plays, musicals, comedy shows that are available every night. The night life is very active and you can find a place for whatever suits your needs even if they change daily. New York City has basically everything you would want. You just have to be active and explore it to find it. There are just so many cultures and sub-cultures, that it gets to be a bit overwhelming at times. I'm sure that other large cities provide and offer similar things. But I feel that there is more selection or variety in New York that it doesn't get stale as fast. This also eggs on competition and quality of your experience there too. It's only a good thing as a consumer. As for the bad, the cost of living is high. Rent is particularly high in parts of Manhattan. But you can find cheap housing in the neighboring boroughs if not different area of Manhattan. The buildings are old and though have architectural charm, might not have the best wiring/plumbing/etc. The same goes for groceries. So yeah, New York City is probably the best place to be if you have money to spend. You have everything at your fingertips and the most you have to do is hop on a subway. If you're poor, well, that's a different story all together. I'm sure that a lot of eurofags enjoyed being in New York City this past summer and would do it again if the euro were just as strong as it was before.

I lived near NYC for 10 years. There are definitely 2 camps about it. Those who love it and those who don't see any appeal. I spent many weekends and thousands of dollars looking for something good there and never found anything I would want to do twice. Yet I knew people who arranged their careers and families just so they could be in NYC. Crowds, bars, plays, minority towns, varied food, and tall buildings just turn some people on. But then there are some awfully odd things that turn some people on.

>>71969 >>it takes a long ass time to get to and get around since transport there is awful. It takes a long time to get around because the city is so huge. Otherwise, NYC's subway is great. Aside from the obvious extensiveness of it, its the only one in the world to offer full 24 hour service, and the express service certainly helps in getting around the city quickly.
>>Also tell her to visit NY State not just NYC. She clearly wants to go to New York. Why in the fuck would she then not go there and instead go to Albany or Buffalo or some shit because some Anon doesn't like it?
Note that many people enjoy large cities, like OP's girlfriend. And New York is the quintessential metropolis.

But anyway, whats up with Montreal's serious second-city complex? Its a great city, but why can't its residents mention why its good without mentioning Toronto? It can stand on its own merits, saying "Toronto sucks" only detracts from it, not improves it. Makes the inhabitants appear kinda provincial, y'know?

I've been to New York a few times, the most recent in just being the summer of 2002. The city IS pretty clean, I didn't see any homeless people nor any thugs. Felt perfectly safe walking the streets. Of-course I was with my family then, as I wasn't an adult yet. I'm not sure that I "love" the place, but I don't think I could ever love any particular place. Of-course we didn't go to any bad neighborhoods and we stayed on Manhattan. I'm sure that if you insist on going to bad neighborhoods you'll... see bad things. So don't go there.

Toronto: Not as bad as it sounds. I grew up in the country about 2 hours from here so it was my only city experience as a kid. Lots of culture, always something going on. Pretty big on shitty suburbs, but lots to do downtown and you can get to cool places not too far from the city fairly easily. Montreal: I've been here 3 times but it was mostly to see concerts so I spent most of the trip hammered. Downtown is awesome, lots of heritage buildings, bars are great too. I'd like to get tickets to a game at the bell centre sometime this year. I'm definately planning on exploring this place more. Boston: Cool city. Visited it when i was younger so not sure about the nightlife. I did get to see the gardens before they pulled them down which is one of my favorite memories from childhood. Cape cod was amazing too, I really enjoyed Sandwich and there is so much history in the area. Planning on visiting here again soon. New York: Never been. Its probably worth a visit but seems too big-city like for me. Not on my list anytime soon

My point is this, there are other modern big cities in the world. I'm sure that if OP's girlfriend were a native French speaker, she'd probably think of Paris in a better light, or even Montreal as the mecca of world culture. Culture exists even in small towns all over the world, you don't have to look at scene bands in over crowded cities to find it.
