Mong Kok & Sham Shui Po apartments

Looking at apartment rentals for Hong Kong on Craigslist, I've been finding a number of incredibly cheap apartments in the Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po areas. Usually around HK$2000-3000/month (US$260-390) and 100 sqft.

However, they also don't have any pictures of the units. So, for anyone familiar with HK - I'm wondering what they'd be like inside? Are they dirty and filled with cockroaches and shit? And would they be more likely in the older buildings typical of the area, or newer "commie blocks"?

I any case Sham Shui Po and Mong Kok would be terrible places in HKG to live, noisy, WAY too many people and if you're white then lol - prepare to stand out like a sore thumb (these are Chinese/Indian neighbourhoods). Most westerners live in the city centre or on the outskirts (Discovery Bay, Tung Chung, Clearwater Bay etc.).

Yes. Considering that I mentioned them as being 100 sqft., it would be logical to assume that I could live in that, no? And they're usually advertised as having a private bathroom. Note that 100 sqf. is about the size of a normal American bedroom - so just imagine your bedroom but with a little bathroom carved out of it.

I'm well aware of what the neighbourhoods are like, and I enjoy the noise, the crowds, and the asians. What I want to know is what are the conditions of the apartments like (inside)?

Not in any apartment i've ever lived in. And, no, i wouldn't imagine my bedroom with a shitter in it. Enjoy being poor.

I actually quite like small spaces though. I've theorized living in a place the size of four single beds - 72 sqft. and it is possible. Pic related, its a theoretical floorplan. 50 pixels = 1 ft. (1 square on the grid is 1 square foot)

Besides, this HK apartment would only be for a month and used basically as a place to sleep/shit/shower/fap.

Wtf that is far from incredibly cheap, my firend. My last house was on 5 acres lake front property and it only cost 280/month. 3 br 2 bath nice spacious house. I can't believe you would even consider paying that much for a shitty rat infested appartment in china.

Why would you want to live so centrally tho??? You get heaps more bang for your buck if you look out of town (lantau island etc.), plus the MTR is brilliant so transportation is really not an issue. The ones I've been in look squalid in the communal areas of the building, but the rooms aren't as filthy (depends on the tenant's standards). They're also noisy during the day but then most locals spend very little time inside their apartments. Make sure wherever you go has a/c (most do), which is pretty much essential.

Really, if I wanted to spend some time living in Hong Kong on a budget, I would look at Mui Wo as its pleasant, direct access to the city via ferry (30mins), on the coast, lots of Europeans live there, plus there are some nice restaurants by the ferry pier. Apartments are also nicer and larger. I know you said you don't mind living with the locals/asians, but trust me unless you're not western (I'm an ausfag that has spend a lot of time in HKG), really it's just nice to have your 'own' people around you. Mui Wo has many Brits, Australians, Candians, French, Germans etc.

I enjoy living in the central city however, for only a month at least. I'm planning on renting this apt. for a month while I visit the city. If I were staying longer-term, I'd probably go with something on Lantau Island, but...thats a little more boring for a vacation.

My brother lives in a 100sq ft place in North Point which cost him $5000 a month. It's pretty much a square, a wash room with a standup shower, a toilet+sink but you cannot be standing out of the shower and have the door open, as in if you are standing in front of the sink, the door wont open/close. The kitchen is just like a 2*5 foot strip on the side beside the bathroom. There is a single size bed, a work table and a closet. TBH, it's good enough if you want something cheap and live by yourself. The condition of his was ok. It's on you to keep it clean.

I've also lived in MK for a bit, again, it really depends on who the owner of the place is and how you maintain it.

Sham Shui Po is all being renovated due to people dying all the time. Not too sure what to expect outta there.

In MK you can generally expect lots of cockroaches, but generally not too dirty. Oh and yeah they'll be the older buildings, complete with long winding hallways and shaky elevators <3

$3000 a month is pretty good for your location, I pay the same amount and I live in the fucking mountains. Is your rent inclusive of bills?

That's pretty common in small apartments. It's more of a "kitchenette" when they're that small. You can fit a fridge, a stove, and a counter with some cabinets above.
