Bus and/subway depending on where said friend lives.

i'll assume that you're european, in which case i'll let you know that the USA's public transportation system is SHIT compared to europe's.

new york, san fran, and boston are alright, and seattle's bus lines are pretty comprehensive, but other than that...

Im European indeed. Also Ive heard of the public transports being shit. Didnt surprise me though, seeing that it isnt a priority in the US.
Also I hate punlic transport with a passion...

LA is a car city although commuter trains buses and the metro get you in the general area that you need to go. No one use public transportation LA, but it is there you just need to work hard to make it usable for yourself.

Depending on where your friends are located, a bicycle or moped may be the way to go. In some urban areas there is transit. Usually taxis are available but you will have to call in for them.

Taxi's are very expensive in most places outside big cities. Scooter would be right up your alley, as long as it's under 50cc you don't need insurance, but from what I hear you need a drivers license.

OP, they give illegal immigrants drivers licenses in California. Just get your friend to rent a car for you and drive it around. As long as you aren't bad at driving then it shouldn't matter.
