Hey /trv/,

I'm on a cross country trip with my family to go see all the 48 continental states in the US. What are the best places to see?

Right now we're in Maryland working our way down the East Coast, we've already been across the Great Plains and the Northwest.

Did you go to New England? I hope so. Anyway in Norfolk, Virginia there's the first landing cross (where the Jamestown settlers actually landed first) and the oldest lighthouse you can still go up in. They're both on fort Story (google for directions), You can take a 45 minute tour of the Norfolk Naval Base for like $7/person. On the north side there's of course Jamestown and the Yorktown battlefield (where Washington and Lafayette beat Cornwalis to win our independence). They charge for the museums now, but you can see a lot of stuff for free outside I think. And the town of Yorktown should not be missed. Get (or download) a map and just drive or walk around there. South of there is cape hatteras. Kittyhawk is at the north end of it, and you can see a lot of cool stuff if you go to the end of it. South of there is Charleston, SC. There's a lot of cool historical stuff to see there too.

take the ferry across the bay from North to South Carolina. it's a hydrofoil that carries your car at 45mph.

Eat out at local places in the southern states. Southern food. Is. Awesome.

Georgia has a pretty cool zoo near Atlanta.
