Now maybe I'm being naive but when I think "Africa" I think "Backwards Nightmare World of War Famine Disease Pestilence Genocide Filth & Death"

How close is my idea to the real thing?

If you MUST go there, everywhere but South Africa, coastal parts of Morocco, and Egypt should be AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS. Seriously though, it's a shithole of almost unimaginable proportions. I once spent a night in Cote D'Ivore, shit was disgusting.

Also be aware that even in the good parts of Africa, it's a shithole. Northern Morocco is nice because there's a couple of Spanish enclaves and lots of history, and the people are nice, but you'll probably get robbed there. Johannesburg is horrible and you shouldn't go out after 6PM.

I have travel around Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Nigeria. It really is up to your definition of a shit hole really. Too many westerners are pansies and Africa-especially the shittier parts- are really enjoyable for me because I don't have fat Americans complaining every ten minutes how there are no burgers or air conditioned everything in the country.

Well, to be fair, that doesn't really mean anything today. Considering that there already have been some highly developed African civilizations (Egypt, Carthage), arguably the most developed in their time.
