Hey trv's. i need some help here. in a few months i will be taking a job in phnom penh. i'll only be making about 400-500 USD per week. i am an american in mylate 20's and i have traveled a bit in asia, just never to phnom penh. can anyone give me ANY suggestions on what it's like. Will I be making enough money? I pretty much live like a backpacker and don't need a lot of luxuries. What parts of town should i live in? will i be able to get around not knowing much khmer? ANY suggestions are appreciated.

i had a choice of phnom penh or bangkok. i also want to be able to save money if at all possible. i didn't think that this salary would allow me to save much in bangkok. also, from what i have read, the people of cambodia esp. phnom penh seem to have a slower, and more relaxed lifestyle.

Don't go to the back packer ghetto near the lake. Go near the old russian market. Rooms for about 3$ with shower, nothing luxurious though.
In most places you can negociate the price for your room if you are going to stay more than 7 days. So about 100$/month on your room. And like most places in south east asia, you can get a good meal for 1-2$ so it's not really worth cooking unless you are homesick. That'll leave you about 1000$/month to buy weed, opium and prostitutes. Enjoy!

That is plenty of money for Phenom Phen. I have no idea why a company would pay you that much to live in Phenom Phen. It would've been enough for Bangkok. Or even to get by in say Los Angeles.

So assuming you aren't a troll, and have simply only travelled in Tokyo and Hong Kong or something. In which case you are in for a big surprise, ie. 3rd fucking world. So you'll have plenty of money, and you'll be safe if you aren't stupid. But you'll also be bored and hot. Phenom Phen isn't a very big city. Cambodia is rural and poor. Oh and hot. very hot. have fun with that.

However the people are very friendly and it is a fun place if you just want to hang out. Also the people you'll have to interact with at first: hotel, restaurants, 'taxi' will speak english well enough.

Oh and I thought the lake area was quite nice. I don't know what those other people's problem was.

one more question to those that might know.. in my days off i would love to travel to the neighboring cities and countries. are there trains and buses or boats that people use? what is the most popular way to travel long distances in that part of the world?

bored? nothing sounds better to me than sitting outside a cafe reading a book, writing, or drinking a beer in the sun. nightlife, bars, and such are only fun every once in a while - i must be getting old. it seems like there is a sense of community in phnom penh - these are just a few reasons why i chose it over bangkok.

nah, me too. I partied like a bastard from 13-20 years old and got away from that lifestyle and those people. Now, i just like to live in cheap places, enjoy tropical weather, delicious food, hot girls, and an easier life.

you'll be wanting to go by plane. the roads in that area are shit. maybe a boat to battambang/siem reap or vien tiane or ho chi minh city. make sure you go to laos. check out the gibbons experience. do thailand as well, its probably worth saving money while you're in cambodia to just travel when your job finishes for a few months

If you have the money, take an airplane. 120km will take you 6 hot, dusty hours by bus.
