Just out of curiosity, how many of you watch movies purely for entertainment purposes?

Not trying to troll, I just don't really get people who can't watch something with a bit of depth just because they need to focus a bit and not just zone out.

Social commentary and human emotional dramas are my goddamn bread and butter though

Depends on what you mean by art, some consider no plot, characters, and bright colors to be art, I don't.

Its mainly because of the prevalence of the Hollywood film - they're aimed at escapism which isn't necessarily that bad. Its just most moviegoers want to be fulfilled and gratified, spoon-fed. You have end-of-American-New-Wave directors like Lucas and Spielberg who are technical artisans but whose style of films lead to a lack of depth or thematic in their films. The massive success of Star Wars and Jaws, respectively, gave rise to the blockbuster mentality of what Hollywood and what movies are now to general audiences.

I usually know well in advance if I'm expecting something more than simple entertainment from a movie. If a "just for fun" flick ends up having some depth to it that I wasn't expecting, then it's a pleasant surprise; if it doesn't, then it remains a "just for fun" flick and I accept it as such. Personally, I prefer depth.
