I couldn't believe how well Obama did. His jokes were written for him, but he had great delivery. And he definitely had a final say in what jokes made it in.
I also thought it was a great response to Trump for the birth certificate issue. Obama showed his birth certificate when he was running for office, he just didn't show the 'long-form' one, and Trump still made that stupid issue the only part of his campaign. It's not only insulting to Obama (which shouldn't be forgiven but is, it was a horrible platform to run for the Presideny of the united States on). And it's not like Obama could just fire back from the briefing room. The media would storm over it and it'd be fuel to Trump's fire more than anything. So... on this one night where jokes are cool (or more cool than they would be at any other time), Obama not only defends himself and puts Trump in his place, but he does it not while skirting around the issue being afraid to put fuel to the fire, he dedicates the opening ceremony, the lion king thing, and all that other portion of his monologue to doing it. It felt like a presidential, or better yet, responsible, ethical and wise way to handle an insulting person.
Sorry for the long post :( I just really liked the speech.
