Obama got into Harvard Law School as a no name with no money (inb4 affirmative action - he didn't even put his race on his application), where he graduated magna cum laude. If at any point he was a bad student, he obviously became a very good student.

The difference between Obama, Kerry, and Bush was that Obama and Kerry had mediocre or poor undergraduate performances, but went on to go back to school, do very well, and have successful careers in academia or the legal field. Bush halfassed his way through his undergrad, halfassed his way through business school, and halfassed his way through the oil business his daddy gave him, leading to its collapse. What's your point? Being competent or successful is not the same thing as being famous. Nearly all presidents after the founders weren't wellknown by the public until they were elected. Lincoln and Roosevelt were great presidents but didn't do anything well known before being elected.

A crucial distinction between Republicans and Democrats is that Democrats love taxing and Republicans love borrowing (i.e. taxing future generations).

In case it isn't already obvious, Republicans ratchet up the national debt in this way. They get votes by using low tax rates so as to cater to the present desires of important voters, but this doesn't solve spending problems, it only superficially resolves them while leaving a bigger and bigger time bomb for future generations.

America does fine with debt *as it is* because America has wicked awesome credit, and also due to the idea that "when you owe the bank $100 million, you own the bank," but this is not a tenable plan for the long term. Real earning power for average Americans has been going down both absolutely and relatively for years.

Both Republicans and Democrats need to cut down on borrowing and to prepare responsibly for the future. America cannot support its lifestyle without a serious fundamental reworking of its manufacturing and agricultural industries. We cannot pretend to be a nation of "temporarily embarrassed millionaires" anymore.

It's a shame that public works projects like those proposed by Roosevelt and Eisenhower are so out of fashion nowadays, because our country's infrastructure is so dicked that we'll find it even harder and harder to pay off this debt as the years go on.
