I'm rewatching this and one part really confuses me.

When the Marines are approaching the colonists under the cooling towers, Ripley tells the Lt. that they can't fire the pulse rifles or it'll basically blow up the whole place.

But then why is it they can use flamethrowers, but not grenades? And later you see them firing anyway and nothing happens.. I never understood that part
