I think a lot of it comes from the cost of CGI... it used to be difficult to do extended CGI sequences with realistic effects (like explosions and buildings crumbling) tied in with CGI monsters...
now its dirt cheap, so I think that type of thing is much more easily doable in these days.
but then again, hollywood is deathly afraid of taking risks.
that is the whole economics behind remakes... guaranteed audience (fans), well established universe/mythologies/stories that require no direct creative input from the film maker that might hurt box office, etc.
Pirates of the Caribbean was expected to be a major box office failure because Pirate movies had always sucked at the box office.
