I'd like to discuss the depiction of seasons in this show. Winter apparently comes at random and can last decades. This doesn't fit with any logical astronomical understanding, so are the seasons influenced by something else like a volcano ash cloud?

From what I recall, they have to rely on food stored during the previous summer. Particularly long winters can end up killing many people.
