Alright here's the deal. I'm working on a Visual Novel where the only (so far) romance option is another female. I'm not trying to send a message with lesbians, I just feel that these two characters happen to be homosexual.

My question to you is this; how can I go about this without feeling forced? I wanted to know what you guys would like to see/not see.

Nowhere in my post did I suggest that.

I said in an earlier post that tropes aren't bad, I reiterate that here, its how they are used. I'm talking about avoiding shit cliches like being abused as a child turning you gay, unless you are some awesome as fuck writer that can make even a steaming pile of shit sound good.

One good thing would be to not have the story be a one gender cast. Even if it's a minor character, showing that the protagonist can have a healthy friendship with guys goes a long way to showing the protagonist is comfortable with her sexuality, and arrived at it naturally and relatively painlessly.

I just find it more important to write for the story and the characters themselves than 'writing for the audience' because doing so often ends up little more than pandering.

Ill admit the whole "gold star" thing is a bit of a (major) fetish for me, but i think its better for the main characters to have other women as their first loves (first date, kiss, etc.).

i cant stand lesbians coming to their sexuality only after having relationships with men.

tl;dr let them be gay from the beginning.

Ultimately, it just depends on what kind of audience you attract in the first place.

Success without a little bit of luck is just unrealistic.

Feel free to write as many stories as you like with lesbian cliches, I'll give you a head start, one free character (and some plot) just for you!

Butch, psychotic, man-hating lesbian that secretly yearns to have a penis, became that way because uncle touched her in bad places. She lives an incredibly lonely existence tormented by unrequited love but really wants babies so compensates by having a shitload of cats. In the end its a relief when she dies prematurely because the only place a lesbian should be is in the ground.
