Why is it so difficult to find pure yuri movies/doujins?
Me and my g/f just came back from an Anime Con and all 7 hentai dealers had 0 all yuri novels or movies. The closest thing was girl on girl futa. Is Japan just not that into yuri? I feel like they could make a killing in the states if more was produced.

tl;dr Why is there very little yuri compared to yaoi/straight hentai.

there's your problem. hentai is a male target consumer and the above poster gave perfect explanation why. while there isnt much hard yuri, we can at least enjoy series like Hanibara. perhaps look for some yuri events.

Yuri and Yaoi are both targeted to the same audiences, when you think about it. It's a predominately female market. Most teenage females are straight, and seem to prefer yaoi over yuri.Then you have the gay guy otaku population, who would still prefer yaoi. That leaves us lesbians, and a few straight male and female yuri lovers to sympathize.

Not saying Japan hates yuri, its just that fact that its nearly impossible to find only girl on girl yuri.
I think thats what he means, and yeah, its kind of true.

Personally i am yet to find a single all yuri movie or doujin without a guy joining in or futa. Maybe i havent looked hard enough yet.. ive been a fan for several years and the closest thing is stainless nights.

There's Hanabira, Shoujo Sect and some of those Cream Lemon Episodes (old as fuck, but still worth it) and that's pretty much it.
And Stainless Nights really is futa. I've watched it recently and there's what? 1 oder 2 lesbian scenes and then the futa android takes over.

I don't know about all that. Aoi Hana isn't getting a second season due to awful sales. So..yeah.

Yaoi sells well because the yaoi fangulls actually buy the anime, manga, and merchandise. That's why Yaoi is thriving and Yuri is stagnating. Not enough yuri fans, when given the option, buy yuri anime/manga to support it.

tl;dr: Many Yaoi fans buy Yaoi, but many Yuri fans don't buy Yuri.

There is little evidence to support this claim, considering several yuri series are doing exceptionally well. Sono Hanabira is the best example, Yuri Hime is doing really well, and there even was a small boom of yuri anthologies in the last two years.

The real reason is that people ASSUME that what you say is true, despite there being no single bit of evidence for this.

People THINK yuri is unpopular and dangerous to include.

Look at Negima. The author was worried about Konoka/Setsuna and kept it to the background.
It became the most popular couple by a mile. Every adaption played it up.

If you look into capitalism, you would notice that your argument is stupid.

See, in the real world, people are NOT perfectly rational. People have misconceptions, worries, and make wrong assumptions that simply are flawed. This is why things get made that nobody wants.

Companies actually have a hard time finding out what exactly people want, and they often try to discover this in ways that do not work well or give wrong results.

In this case, the topic is something that is disenfranchised in the country. Japan still has many people believe that homosexuality is not real or temporary, and that only western perverts are interested in this. This perception includes those making decisions.

America is a very capitalist country, don't you agree? Did you know that M/M is a very, very successful subgenre in urban fantasy?

Despite that, we run into situations where an editor asks an author to turn a M/M ship into M/F because the editor believes it will be less controversial. Example: Wicked Pretty Things' editor, Trisha Telep.

Even when M/M is insanely popular and sells well almost every time, people do this, because of their misconceptions.

I think the problem is just that there aren't enough of us to support much more than what's already there, plus marketability. Just because something is yuri doesn't make it good. The market just seems to lurch to extremes without really finding a balance.

This is actually important.

Compare the sales for Sonohana or AkaiIto/Aoi Shiro to the sales of the terribad rising star yuri games. One of the RS yuri games had a fucking strapon with SPIKES.

Guess which people bought and which people avoided. Spoiler: The yuri without strapon spikes.

Also, there's a limited amount of outright lesbian pornography being produced; It's not surprising seeing how macho japanese males consider themselves and how sexually available women are.

I guess Japan simply doesn't take girlxgirl relationships seriously enough for there to be a market for them.

I know the Japanese know of homosexuality and that it's not rejected as it is in the West. But if you look at it, people don't seen to grasp fully the concept of lesbianism.

Julie Newmar" (Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, John Leguizamo), where the drag queens go to a country town and people don't know they're drag queens? They didn't hate them and it wasn't denial. Simply it was something that hadn't crossed their minds. They hadn't been made aware of it as a society, past rudimentary terms and abstract concepts; It's the same thing.
