I once bought a pirated copy of Dungeon Siege from Russia (time before we had internet in home) and it had some weird startup screen in Russian with bunch on fish on an orange background. I didn't know which button to press because it was in Russian but somehow it managed to change my Windows theme into that orange background with bunch of fish.

Just to clarify, that's Microsoft's fault. What version of a game it's compiled against must be installed. Valve uses same DirectX for each game they compile, but the other devs don't, so they have to package it or else your game will crash.

The reason you have to install the same thing more that once is because they make the game based off that build and would rather not leave it to chance of you having a version thats incompatible with the game so they just install the one the game needs. Annoying, but necessary.

It's a program a lot of MMOs use to let you download the game.

It's a peer to peer program much like various torrent programs except after you're done downloading the game it keeps running in the back ground uploading to other people who are downloading the game. It runs on start up, too.

It just eats your bandwidth without making it obvious that it's doing so and really isn't that great to begin with.

It's also annoying to delete it EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME YOU DOWNLOAD ANY FUCKING FREE TO PLAY MMO EVER.

It's a security thing. You should need admin rights to write to "program files" or whatever, so programs should save user files in user directories not system directories. That way users can run the program and use it without needing admin rights.

Of course millions of programs disobey this and it caused Microsoft no end of problems when they tried to make their operating system more secure because just about everything demands to be run as an admin.

You can get it from just about anything. It's the crabs of the internet. Installed a game? PMB. Installed an add-on? PMB. Watched a video? PMB.

It gives no prompt, it simply installs itself and you'll never even know. Why is this shitty little piece of software a thousand times craftier than any 'real' malware? I have no fucking idea.

Also I always pirated and GFWL games were always okay because there's a hack that makes them all work through Hamachi and Tunngle easily.
But I had never actually used GFWL properly in a bought game, and I realized how awful it is with GTA IV.

Control pannel -> Pando booster settings
Uncheck start pando when windows starts
Go to advanced settings and enable the upload limit, and put in whatever your connection can handle without slowing down

There, it's not shit anymore and you won't have to worry about new games reinstalling it, thus using the terrible default settings.
