This is rather well known but I want to keep this thread alive, so:

Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles were originally supposed to be one big game, but hardware restraints and time prevented that from happening. They eventually came up with that lock-on cartridge thing so that they could be combined into Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Knuckles routes appearing in Sonic 3 even though you can't access them is proof of him being planned as playable all along.

Did you know the Chemical Plant acts were originally stages for the Death Egg right before the last act with Silver Sonic and the Egg Mech? Changes were made to add a spike to the game's difficulty curve and made it the second zone, implementing the industrial background and the Mega Mack.

The layout of the level is also very similar to the Death Egg's.

The fact that Sonic can't swim is due to Yuji Naka originally believing that hedgehogs could not swim.

Flying Battery Zone was originally going to be on Sonic 3 rather than Sonic and Knuckles.

Mushroom Hill Zone was originally called Mushroom Valley.

Adding onto this anons post, a full level theme was produced for the Death Egg Zone because it was intended to be a full zone. The song is still in the game, but unless you stand still for no reason, you will only hear it for about three seconds. It plays just before you fight Silver Sonic.

One of the tracks in the sound test for Sonic 2 was for the original Hidden Palace Zone which was one of many unfinished and unincluded stages found on the Sonic 2 beta that was stolen from a trade show and leaked many years ago. Others included a tree/wooden themed zone and another dubiously titled zone known as Genocide City, probably taken out for... Well, kids usually played these games.

Though there is no proof, many believe this image in Marble Zone from the first Sonic the Hedgehog was supposed to be Super Mario's face. This was the game that was supposed to and did make Sonic a big threat to Mario, but simply sticking his face in the background without mocking him seems completely pointless.

Micheal Jackson was rumoured to have worked on the soundtrack for Sonic 3. His name never appeared in the credits, but many songs in the game are similar to his style (particularly Ice Cap Zone and the Mini Boss Theme), and I've heard a few times that SEGA confirmed it after his death, but I've ever been given sauce; you'll have to look that up and confirm it yourself.

'Sonic the Comic' explains Sonic's origins: he was a prickly brown hedgehog that could run fast, but after meeting Dr Kintobor, he was given special shoes that helped him break the sound barrier, which turned him blue. Dr Kintobor eventually ate a rotten egg or something and turned into the evil Dr Robotnik say it backwards.

Nobody considers this canon.

His name being left out of the credits was not alluded to the molestation accusations, contrary to common belief. The limited audio capabilities of the Mega Drive did not allow the result Micheal wanted to achieve, so he left things as we now know.

Later on, Sonic & Knuckles Collection for PC held a compilation of Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles and the full game with midi and FM synthetizer rendered soundtracks. However, SEGA changed the music from some of the stages. Said stages were Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base.

Years later, Sonic Generations now contains new arranged music from Sonic 3. Again, the original music for the three mentionned stages are absent.

Sonic '06 was shit because it was only developed for a few months and rushed out before proper testing in order to make it out on time for the holiday season.

Pretty common fact, but eh.

Oh, and Yuji Naka left SEGA months before '06 was released to make his own studio, making him the last of the original Sonic creators to leave SEGA.

Sonic was actually supposed to be a leader of a Rockstar band. He also had a girlfriend (who was human ironically) and he had a more menacing look (spiky quills, fangs, more evil look), but when he was brought to the U.S., the U.S. changed his look and story entirely that the creators were actually pissed at them.

In the first manga of him, he was only a normal hedgehog guy called Nicky Parlouzer that loved another hedgehog girl called Amy(hence the name) but when he got angry he turns into Sonic, just like Clark Kent/Superman

Craig Stitt, the guy who created Spyro the Dragon, actually worked at SEGA when Sonic 2 was being developed, and helped create art for the zones of the game. He also created one of the rejected designs for Sonic's sidekick, a flying turtle named Boomer.

Sonic used to be strong in Brazil, thanks to Tec Toy, SEGA's official representative in South America.

They managed to release some Sonic games before any other country and even translated/adapted other SEGA games to brazilian pop characters.

In the British Sonic the Comic Super sonic is actually more of a personality split brought about by his proximity to the Chaos emeralds. he losses part of his mind, and is sent into a frenzy whilst changed, it is seen more as a curse than a useful ultimate power.

Later on, he is seperated from SS by a machine of Dr. Kintobor's design, Super sonic becomes his own person and sonic is set free. he is more like a demon in this form, able to teleport from world to world, summon great energy, etc. but becomes even more insane, making him into one of Sonics greatest enemys rather than greatest assets

Fang/Nack the Weasel/Sniper.

Halfway into the seasons of the comic amy suffered a major redesign from the useless fangirl archtype of the games/TV/other comics into more of a lonegun fighter, Amy had a crossbow for a while and was actually useful, leading the freedom fighters without sonic to battle Robotic and the other badguys. This is because one of the women in charge of the comic was a avid feminist and wanted to portray a female character who did not rely on a male to fight for her.

Is it wrong that I want Madonna to make a future appearence? Also, Knuckles was originally going to be green and have a Jamacian accent. His final design is rather subtle to this. Supposedly, the scar was supposed to be the Nike symbol for some product placement deal that never came to be.

X-Treme was being developed by Sonic Team USA.
Sonic Jam was a compilation of the Genesis games for the Saturn (not emulation but actual ports to the Saturn hardware, they even included optional changes like Spindash enabled in Sonic 1, and several level design changes)
Yuji Naka decided to include a hubworld in 3D to show what a Sonic in the Saturn could be like, it featured some mini-games and challenges to complete, but it has nothing to do with X-Treme.

Actually it was cost and time restraints. Making a cartridge with enough memory to hold the damn thing would've costed too much. Also Mushroom Hill is on the Sonic 3 cartridge, but not accessible. However you can see it's level portrait in the select game screen, usually after beating the last boss. Other assets from Knuckles is also in the game, including the sub boss music which can be triggered on Hydrocity's sub boss by almost drowning.

It was confirmed by one of Michael Jackson's sound teams that he DID in fact worked on Sonic 3. However he was not happy with the sound quality of the tracks in the game and asked to have his name removed from the credits. Ironically the music from Sonic 3 is widely regarded as some of the best ever produced for a videogame with a shit load of fan remixes made.

The thing about MJ that people don't realize is that he was completely obsessive compulsive about things, especially the quality of his music. Anybody who worked with him knew how passionate he got about making sure that every single little thing was right.

With a small sound dev team like Sega's (compared to his recording studios he was used to), he likely wasn't able to have the quality product he originally envisioned, even though it was damn good.

Sure, both of them are platformers but the playstyle and the way the games are played are drastically different

Ristar was made by Sega Technical Institute, the same guys that almost all of the Genesis Sonics. On top of that the team also had most of Sonic Team's original members at the time, so you can even say they were responsible for all of the main series Sonic games at the time with the exception of Sonic CD and Sonic 3D Blast.

That origin actually originated in a book unrelated to Sonic the Comic. Kintobor became Robotnik because Sonic tripped while carrying a rotten egg and it fell on a machine he was working on. later in the comic Sonic goes back in time and places the egg in the fridge and trips his past self because the future without Robotnik was worse.

Back when Sonic was created, Sega could have never envisioned an Internet future where countries would so freely communicate through love of video games. The first game was intended to have only a vague story, copies of Sonic 1 were distributed to each separate localization department and they were tasked with creating their own story for the game. They wanted the game to have a relevant story in every region it was released so it would be a global hit. This is why there are so many weird accounts of Sonic's "origin story."

Of course then Sonic became huge, the Internet happened, and with Sonic Adventure they attempted to homogenize the whole thing.
