Games use stock images and stock sounds all the time. This is stupid. Kotaku is stupid.

Starcraft used stock sounds. Baldur's Gate used stock sounds.

There are reasons to hate ME3 that aren't stupid.

Using a stock image in games is fine. I personally find no issue with the winter space image they used.
But using a stock image for a character that has been in all three games? A character in which a big part of her mystique was what the hell she looked like? A character that many people grew to really like? Not only just using a stock image but having the reveal be a half assed picture that makes no god damn sense since there is no where that photo could have taken place. Is simply a slap in the face of everyone that bought and put effort into their games.
I'm mad as fuck.

I don't know how many people noticed but in ME2 many of the rooms had a single photo of Liara in it. The artist had a stock pile of "kit items" that they'd dig through..grab one random element and just stick it everywhere. This ends up making Liara look like a whore because apparently she slept with everyone who had a bedroom in ME2.

This time the level artist probably thought "oh hey I'll throw in a little treat for the tali fans" and didn't consider the backlash that might occur when cheapening a reveal like this.

Darth Vader was at least human. Tali is an alien species that's HEAVILY implied to be much more like turians than humans (similar biology, Grunt's line in ME2, etc.)

No, it's because they hyped up this big reveal for three fucking games, cock teasing it at every corner, and then the money shot was a human with three fingers and facial markings.

It's Bioware. No matter what they do, there will be an enormous group of so called "fans" waiting to throw fecal matter at them.

Some of them are actually old fans who have a hard time accepting that bioware now makes other games then Baldurs gate as well, most of them are just general haters jumping on the bandwagon. The think the big problem here is that they didn't bother to remake Tali in 3D. It's one thing to base a character's appearance off a real person, just look at Shepard, but it would still be tacky as hell if they just had random pictures of Mark Vanderloo thrown throughout the game.

You never put real images inside of a video game. It's just not done, especially not nowadays when games are starting to look realistic. It's just fucking tacky.

Why didn't they just take that stock image and then model it out in 3D for the image? That would be perfectly acceptable, it's exactly what they did with Shepard.

This whole thing just reeks of unprofessionalism. Not the "our writing is shit and there's lots of bugs" unprofessionalism that you would expect, but the majority of this is something that I would expect to see in some fanmade mod or maybe a hastily put together flash game made by a baby.

The one thing that is most important about this is this:

Bioware does not own exclusive rights to the likeness of tali under her helmet.

That means, if you license the picture legally from gettyimages, you can use it in anything you want. "Tali" could appear in any game or movie anywhere. She could become the willhelm scream of stock photos. Need a dead wife for your main character? Tali. Need a random photo to hang up on a wall in an abandoned house the character can encounter? Tali. Want to base a 3D model off of the stock photo, creating a character that looks a lot like Tali? Go ahead, bioware can't sue you.

Although, as far as I'd guess, bioware would still have claim to the quarian race. So, you probably couldn't make the same modifications to the stock image as they did and be legally in the clear. But the extent of their laziness may very well cost them exclusivity to a main character.

The issue here is Tali's true appearance has been something many fans were interested in and stirred up a lot of debate, interpretations, theories, etc. All of this builds up and ultimately... Bioware goes to the internet, takes a stock photo, doctors it (poorly), and uses it as the final product.

It's a spit in the face to anyone who cared about the Mass Effect universe.

Can the people over at Kotaku get anymore retarded? Its not about WHO actually had the time to reverse search the fucking picture, its about that Bioware took at picture from the internet without having the RIGHTS for it.
