DVDs and Games are distractions above all else. As much as we might enjoy them, they're glorified children's toys for people who need to be entertained in order to stop them breaking shit and being arrested. Books represent a desire for self-improvement, technical knowledge, education, perceptiveness, intelligence and self-reflection through literature. I look at someone who has lots of DVDs and games and think - I wonder how much time they spend mindlessly cabbaged in front of the TV? I look at someone who has lots of books and wonder how much they know, what they can create, what they can write. Your bookshelf is a physical receipt of all the knowledge in your head. It's a record of where you've been, a map of your intellectual landscape.
