honest question, what do game developers need over 2 million dollars to create a video game for? It is strictly for employees salaries right? Unless a game company is outsourcing it's programing/animation the only real expense are the employee salaries since and voice actor salaries as well. I am most likely wrong, I just have wondered where all that money goes since most game creators have their own animators/programmers.

2 million dollars is chump change these days for video game development.

I'm not sure when that would've been seen as a big chunk of money. Probably up till the 6th generation.

Teams are huge these days, voice actor budgets are huge, there's middleware and software licensing costs, and obviously, physical facilities are bigger than ever so there's that cost to contend with as well.

Not to mention, experienced developers these days probably expect a higher pay grade. They don't work for almost nothing anymore.

So yes, while some of these costs don't apply to the Wasteland 2 project, 2 million dollars could easily be spent on the cost of paying a dev team for a good two years, hardware, software and facilities.

They PROBABLY won't make 2.1 million, and here's why.

Most of the expensive rewards for backing have been claimed. On top of that, most of the people who care enough for the expensive rewards, I.E. more than the basic 15 dollar basic version, have already bought the game.

They are at 1.7 million, they need 400,000 to make it to 2.1 mil. They need 26,666 MORE backers to buy the 15 dollar version to reach 2.1 million. That's almost the amount of backers they have right now.

Of course, this figure can fluctuate with higher dollar prizes and versions of the game being purchased, but realistically won't be reduced lower than say, 15,000 backers, optimistically.

As much as I'd like the project to reach 2.1 million, I do not think it will from simply a logistical standpoint. My post wasn't to make people feel bad, it was to inform people about the concept of guarded optimism; I don't want my fellow anon to get their hopes up for nothing.

I hope you realize QA testing is the publisher's responsibility.

The developer does some basic QA, but the publisher provides most of it.

Even if Obsidian WAS working on more than just conceptual stuff for Wasteland 2, they wouldn't have a firm deadline so bugs wouldn't be a huge issue.

Developer has time limits.
When those time limits hit the day there's a build show to the Publisher.
The publisher is then responsible of testing it across the platforms it wishes to distribute it on, as well as testing their market.

Once they finish this step, called QUALITY ASSURANCE they take it back to the developer with notes on what's wrong.

Meanwhile, Developers have been coding away on the next part of the game they are meant to code according to the production schedules.

In a perfect world, the Publisher green lights the bug fixing.

BUT, since that shit costs a regular salary they don't want it done, or ignore it.

Devs never get a chance to fix the issues during production since they are busy finishing elsewhere.

I also happen to believe Bethesda is a trashy developer too. But Bethesda has a dedicated modding community that has saved their asses and made them look a lot better than they really are.

Either way, I have trouble believing Obsidian's only problem is QA. Alpha Protocol had problems that were well beyond simply having shit QA; a lot of those problems were the result of poor design/implementation.

If you wanted to, you could wait till significant work on the game has been finished, when screenshots, previews and trailers are out before preordering or buying the finished product.

They're still selling the game when it's done to people who haven't pledged. It's not like you only have a 30 day window to buy it.

It's only people that are very interested in the genre and have a vested interest in seeing it revived that'll pledge.

They are both around the same time period.

Wizardry and Ultima were 1981, Wizardry being first person and Ultima being top down.

Though if you count roguelikes, the Rogue in 1980 would have come a little before, and that is top down.

I'm willing to lay down a measly $15 - $50 and allow inxile to open up obsidian's library of dev tools, writers, engines etc. Having a larger base of content and more people working on writing etc should hasten development and improve the final product.

Crysis visuals wouldn't fit DF, because DF is designed around a top down perspective being centered around text, while Crysis is designed for a first person perspective centered around audio-visual impressions, not to mention the fact that you would need something in the area of a supercomputer to process that amount of data.

I'm all for DF with better graphics, but giving it "Crysis visuals" is just stupid.
Most of the charm in DF lies in imagining the situation that you have at hand.

Even if we allow the ability to magically press a button and have everything fully rendered it would not improve it. We would then have to add further features to make up for the variety inherent in imagination, everything would have to be further diversified: some arbitrary number of alternate models for each thing to be modeled, to prevent repetition.

Something imagined is greater than the sum of its imagined parts. The same is not true of graphical representations, unless the graphics are so incomplete or uninterpretable as to require imagination to fill in the blanks.

since each tile is its own stair, if DF had a graphics engine, it would shown as 3 side by side spiral staircases

XXX in my interpretation, is a grand, three wide staircase leading into the bowels of my fortress.

symbolic graphics leave room for interpretation, so that my fortress can conform to my imagination, rather than the opposite.

My Stance on gameplay/visuals:

So, I'd say gameplay, comfortable UI and a decent story is what games need foremost, however one can not disregard graphics.
Good graphics might not be inherently necessary (ie: a bad game becoming good due to graphics), but bad graphics can dull the experience of a good game. That is to say, there is a certain 'minimum' of graphics that is expected.
I'd say, good graphics can make a game sell, but Halo springs to mind: when it was released for XBox it was a decent game, when it was ported to PC (where it was meant to go in the first place mind you) all mechanics and graphics had become rather shallow and unimpressive. It had to compete with current games and was aged.
This has nothing to do with old games aging; as I said: it had to compete with modern games as a modern game.

So... well, I'd say graphics should neither be the focus nor neglected. A certain minimum of details and effects should be a given, however that depends on the target audience as well.
If you want to sell Wasteland 2 to people who played the original and are fans of Jagged Alliance and the likes, it's more or less likely, graphics are a mere tool and not an inherently important aspect of the game.

i've grown attached to a specific dwarf on more than one occasion, be it the "black knight" crossbowman, caught alone with his back to the wall, arms hacked off, biting enemies to death.

or the friendly farmer who spends his idle time in his old age wandering around the gardens and telling jokes to the other dorfs.

It's the same problem people have when they watch the movie based on a book they've read.

Not really, I enjoy most games that come out. Imagination isn't required to enjoy a game, it just fills in the parts which are lacking. It is only beneficial to games which attempt to create a large and diverse open world, which most RPGs try to create.

A game like MGS doesn't need imagination, it's a movie with stealth sequences. An FPS doesn't require imagination. A JRPG with hallways, bland characters, and a plot about friendship doesn't need imagination, it's about several-thousand hit combos.

The games which try to create imagination playgrounds are the games which require imagination. Minecraft. TES. DF. Grand Strategy. Shitty as some of them are on gameplay or graphics, they're unparalleled as imagination playgrounds. MISS MISS MISS in Morrowind was better than kill cutscenes in Skyrim, in terms of imagination.

Wasteland and Fallout were imagination playgrounds, though perhaps due to graphical limitations and not intentionally.

Sorry a bit of a tangent there... Hopefully you see what I mean.

Not who you're talking to. An ascii symbol of a dwarf is incomplete enough to force your imagination to kick in. A sprite is a reasonable approximation which requires no imagination. It doesn't prevent it, per se, but it requires conscious effort to flesh out the sprite rather than it happening passively.

I don't think you see different faces, I think you recognize different people, and I know what you mean. Pic related. Despite having roughly six faces per race (pulled that number out of my ass), and each race the same height and build you find things to single out. Slight differences in clothing and face/hair combinations set them apart and made them memorable.

However, that doesn't make for broad diversity, the way an ascii symbol does. Height and Build are set. Face and Hair are limited to a select few choices. Skyrim and Oblivion included face gen technology and body sliders to make up for the limited graphical diversity of static models.

I'm not saying we should give up on graphics, just that not all games benefit from them, and some actually suffer. Chess does not benefit from 3D graphics with a free floating camera. Games attempting an incredible breadth or depth suffer from them.
