In my experience with emulators the CPU is much more important than the GPU so couldn't that be the case next gen?

GC was the most powerful system of the 3. I'm wondering about the Wii U, though. The 720 has it's shitty DRM, I'd be surprised if PS4 doesn't follow suit. A fast CPU is needed for emulation because its being done with software.
But more cores/threads doesn't automatically make a CPU faster.
IPC/frequency and instruction sets matter more than the number of threads. Bulldozer is a perfect example that MOAR CORES is not the answer to everything.

In my experience with working with 3D computer graphics and games design, I found that the GPU is far more important than a CPU. You're right about physics, but when it comes to AI that's hampered only by dev's inability to figure out how to code AI well. Half-Life and FEAR had some of the best AI ever seen in gaming, and they aren't exactly heavy on CPU power.

Meanwhile a GPU and more RAM are useful for things like bigger maps, higher player caps in multiplayer, less object pop-in, more objects and entities being rendered, and more.

Fear had decent AI but that was still limited to a handful of routines and flanking. You can make it as clean as possible, but eventually you're going to need more power if you don't want your AI to simply run the same script and mimic each other. I don't remember half life AI being very good...in HL1 they ran straight towards you, same with Hl2 (they even had that little sequence where you set up turrets against a flood).

Better gpu may get you more draw distance and more detail per model, but it's not going to help up player count. The player count at this point is all about your netcode and a little bit of reality. You're not necessarily going to be able to handle the sheer UDP stress of having hundreds of people on screen without excessive interpolation. Internet standards would need to improve. Either that or we'd need to make some breakthrough with neutrinos.

Battlefield had limitations because the engine is awful. There are literally no redeeming qualities to Frostbite 2. It was produced around multipass deferred and realtime radiosity, and they couldn't get either working. Instead it's down to tile based and quasi radiosity. PC build gets by thanks to more headroom, and even then it's still cutting it close and not maintaining 60fps on most configs.
