My Opinion: I think growing up with these systems and playing them for years b4 the 3d age still makes them my favorite systems and games. I can't really say every game was original, but how they expressed individuality was really what certain games out-shined other ones. Plus, it was an age of innocence for me, so I could be like "WOW. THIS SHITTY GAME IS AWESOME." And as an adult, I wont even buy games new, just rent them until I'm done with them. I still pick up my old snes/genesis/nes control and play through a game, but I can't wait to sell my 360.

You know, everyone always says the SNES is better than the Genesis.
But why?
There's only about eight games on the SNES I like and at least 20 on the Genesis.
SNES was just full of RPG's and that's about it.

SNES had the best racers, platformers and fighters of the time.
It had the best version(s) of Street Fighter 2, it had the Megaman series, Mario Kart and F-Zero to name a few.
Don't get me wrong, I love Ristar, Kid Chameleon, Sonic and Vectorman, but the SNES library obliterates the Genesis.

No, seriously, it has the biggest ratio of good games per genre out of any console. That, the fact it was the spawning pool of several fucking awesome series, and the fact that the chance of a non-big-name game being good is actually quite significant (see Galerians, Echo Night, Deception, etc).

I didn't really start playing video games until the Game Boy Color, and my first real console was the Gamecube, so I missed out on a lot of old games. I've played a lot of the good ones though, through emulators or downloaded them on Wii, and many of them are still great.
I try to play as many retro games as possible, it seems like many of my friends know nothing about older games.

Think about cinema. There have been key points throughout the history of cinema where a movie came along and "changed the game" so to speak, and evolved the medium.

Despite this it's not as if just because you were born in the 90's means you are going to be a fuckwit and only enjoy movies of the last 15 years because there's still a shit-ton of good stuff 15-100 years ago.

If you like games then you should have no problem enjoying old games EVEN if you just started gaming this generation. There are practically no genres that were once good, and play horribly today.

Pic is me being able to enjoy all games from my lifetime (1990-2012), and also being able to enjoy games dating all the way back to the Atari age of consoles.

I'll make this easy for you. Games you should play:

NES: SMB1,3,Kirby, MegaMan, Snake Rattle and Roll

GENESIS: Sonic, Mortal Kombat, And not much else (Dinosaurs for Hire maybe)

SNES: Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Contra 4, Castlevania 4, Mario Kart, Final Fantasy 4,5,6, And most fighting games (Street Fighter 2 in particular)

PC (Master race): System Shock 2, Doom 1,2, Heroes of Might and Magic (3 is the best, but it's newer), Raptor, Monkey Island, Alone in the Dark (RE, before RE existed), Commander Keen, Golden Axe, Cosmos Cosmic Adventure, And other shit.

There are other good ones. Just go get some Emulators and do it up

Actually I feel the opposite. You can't objectively criticize older games without people with their nostalgia goggles on too tight getting upset over it and glossing over any flaws

I hate retro gaming. It's always people younger than me who think they get some kind of "geek cred" for liking old games. Well fuck you, hipsters. Unlike you kids, I actually lived during the NES era. We would have killed to have the games that are available today. But hipsters like to pretend games were better back then. They weren't. They were severely limited by hardware. Games today are infinitely superior. Going backwards isn't helping anyone. It's faux nostalgia from hipsters who aren't even old enough to have nostalgia for that era because they weren't born yet.

Yes, i know. The Playstation 1 is my favorite, but the PS2 comes as a real close second (though it lacks some of the magic) and i can't seem to enter the SNES. I've played and enjoyed all of the big names, but i cringe playing lesser-known games.

I love everything retro, to be honest. Although, much like OP, I didn't get a hold of gaming until later on life. My first console was a Sega Genesis. I played it a lot, but the culmination of my childhood gaming was my Gameboy era. I fucking loved that gizmo. I brought it to school, and I'd spend the whole recess playing Zelda with friends, trying to figure out the puzzle. To this day, the Oracle games are still my favourite.

That's another great feature about the SNES. Some of the carts had chips that basically upgraded the console, sometimes as high as low end 32 bit quality.

It made it capable of competing with the likes of PS1 without seeming archaic technologically.

Some people appreciate certain aspects of games. I don't think it always amounts to people just having nostalgia goggles on.

I played Deus Ex last year for the first time, and loved everything about it. What many call flaws I found as great game design. The shooting, for one thing, was not rooty tooty point and shooty, but actually had a system about it that required both your own skill, and your character skill points.

Based off the people I know (IRL) that have bashed it I can judge their taste off their game libraries which tend to be all rooty tooty games, and nothing else, and it leads me to believe they aren't seeing Deus Ex for what it is.

And this goes for many games.

Both sides are at tug of war.

There's a big group of fans who love the handholding, and casualness of new games, and there are a big group of fans who enjoy the intricacies of game design present in old games. I don't think it's nostalgia to blame. That's just a scapegoat people use to hate on old games where they shouldn't be hated on.

It's like saying old movies are bad because the special effects were worse, or that old music was bad because they didn't have electronic sound synthesizers and shit like that.

No....some people just appreciate certain qualities about different products.

Gaming wasn't mainstream and good games that made name for themselves stuck to their formula faithfully while adding new things.

Now... Gaming is mainstream.
Good games quickly sell their names and remove things that require too much developement time, so they can churn out the sequel at a faster rate.
The already lower quality product gets pieces of it chopped up as exclusive DLC.
Competition is now in marketing instead of developement.

Shitty games were always the majority, but back then they didn't have a huge vocal fanbase that hyped their own massive pile of shit.
Also they weren't advertised as much.

Five man teams, hell even one dude, who just sat down and made the best game he could.
I mean if you look at the credits of even just something like Master of Orion there was maybe 8 people who had actually added content to the game, 3 of which did something tertiary.
Even disregarding the horseshit "publisher credit" that goes on today the teams are still up in in the hundreds.

Unfortunately the sports genre won't see any developement, because EA owns all the big names of that genre and their lack of desire to develope the genre any further made it so that not a single gamer with taste bothers with sports games anymore and idiots only buy MADDEN and other EA stuff, meaning indies can't cut into the market.

There were a huge bunch of great games, but an even bigger bunch of super shitty games. Time has just allowed us to filter the shitty ones out of our memory. All we remember are the gems.

A lot of the old games haven't aged well because of bad interface, controls and not being self-explanatory ingame. I have a hard time trying an old game I didn't actually play "back in the day", while I slip right into the familiar ones.

I HATE the Genesis sound chip. It's horrible, and kills any fun you have playing the games. Somebody once told me that the music in Comix Zone was good. I've played the fuck out of that game and I can't even find a discernible melody in the cocophony of tinny banging that is the music.

This isn't even from a physical media standpoint either. When you force a game developer to work within a very small, limiting console like say the SNES, you had people push those systems to the absolute limits and generate some of the most original concepts and designs.

Competition was much more fierce causing companies to really try their hardest to get noticed.

Variety in game styles was much more diverse, sure there were tons of platformers but there were also an amazingly large amount of creative arcade games, the Japanese RPG genre wasn't dead, PC gaming was doing as well as it always had, racing games were at their zenith.

The last two console zelda games, twilight princess and skyward sword, are prime examples of this.Sure majora's mask had a small tutorial area in the beginning of the game telling you how to use deku flowers, but it was damn near over in 15 minutes.

Let's not make this a topic about zelda though, many other games are guilty of this.

Yes they do. And there are games that do have those ads that keep popping up in the middle of the screen. They're not used far and wide yet, but it can be real distracting; sometimes enough to break the flow of the game.

The libertarian model of just letting everything become ad space may look good on paper, but it eventually becomes messy.

Yeah, I definitely recommend it. Especially if you're not the kind of person that finds games like Touhou a relaxing walk in the park.

I like how it doesn't instantly kill you off the moment you get hit. It basically just knocks out upgrades that you get to equip before every battle (they're permanent, and more add on as the game goes by), until you have nothing left. Once you have nothing, you die. Still, you can respawn in the same place if you have extra lives.

The only thing that does kill you in an instant is when enemies get in physical contact of you, or if you hit walls.

I love the 4th and 5th generations, but this is inaccurate. It was more like the games were neither hardcore or casual, they didn't make the games for either demographic. During this era, the general populace was even more "casual" than now, and the disparity between the developer skill level and the consumer skill level was high. It was more like they made games for no particular demographic because there were no stable ones for games at the time (the children were the ones playing the games, but they also had to entice the parents to purchase them). This where Nintendo's "we-make-games-for-everyone" schtick came from, they wanted to appeal to everyone because no one demographic was dominant in games (other than probably males).

The console market specifically was smaller. You had SEGA, NINTENDO, and later on playstation.

Until the playstation came along competition and flat out slandering other companies was commonplace and even when the playstation came out it was still very tense.

As far as I'm aware it was part of Nintendo's strategy to get in to the American market. With retailers unwilling to take on any games consoles on after the Video Game Crash of '83, Nintendo changed the design it to look more like a VCR, probably so it fitted in to the look of people's tv/video set up and fooled some of the retailers.

You can't sell a 3D gimmick with 2D games as retail games, with a very few special exceptions.

If they put, like, Bit Trip Complete or even Klonoa 3 as a retail release, that would be amazing.

It is so confusing what's going on when 3d is turned on. The only downfall is that unlike bit trip complete, it doesn't have the bonus levels. Still as a guy who never played the originals, I love this.

NBA Jam was multiplat

SNES/SFamicom also used to have the best soccer games (J.League Excite Stage 96 and Fighting Eleven/ISS Deluxe) and the best tennis games (super Tennis and Super Smash Court)

Racing games were also leaps and bounds better on the Nintendo console.

can't think off the top of my head of any other quality sports game that the Genesis/Megadrive had over the SNES

You're probably about halfway there-ish...it's about a 20-25 hour game depending on how many sidequests you want to do, so...you probably have another day or two of playing
