It didn't have to be that way. Want to give Samus character? Have her rethink how she purged all Metroids seeing as THE BABY saved her life, then have cloned Metroids show up and have her figure out if she wants and/or needs to destroy them again. Adam isn't an inherently flawed concept, but instead of an old colleague she has a strained friendship with we got some fucked up codependent relationship with a sadist.
And, you know, they could have made a decent game on top of all that. One without pixel hunts and endless linear maps.
