Hey /v/! Sprite here. Check out my archived threads at chanarchive. I'm a guy claiming to be a writer at Double Fine, believe me if you want yadayadayada.

I'm here tonight for one reason. The video game world is a cold, cruel, piece of shit world. I'm having trouble staying positive, and I'm having trouble keeping up with sleepless nights followed by failure after failure after failure.

Motivate me. Tell me why you got into video games. Tell me why you love them and CHOOSE to still love them. Prove to me that there are fans out there that love genuine video games made for the fans, and not just fans that will eat up whatever is 'fresh' in the market. I need that motivation right now.

Well, let me put it another way. A videogame is rarely the product of just one man, like a book, nor the vision of just one man, like a movie or a drawing. A videogame is usually twenty to thirty people who gather to do one thing:

Share something awesome with the world.

Look at Diablo. Look at Doom. Look at Quake. Look at Dungeons of Dredmor. Videogames offer us so much, so many incredible, awesome feelings.

Cocking a shotgun in Doom.
Killing Dracula in Castlevania.

I love videogames because there's nothing like them.

Why do you love them, Sprite? You must, to have gotten where you are now.

I've been falling out of love with games lately. The only thing that gets me to play anymore is playing with friends or nostalgia.

But I went back to Shadow of the Colossus today, for the first time in months, and killed two Colossi. I still haven't finished it even though I've had that HD collection since it came out. It was wonderful. The world was rich. The feeling of solving the puzzle of how to topple the giant was rewarding. I'll probably finish the game in the next day or two.

Will I still be following the game industry this time next year? It's hard to say. But I was reminded why I loved it in the first place today.

I got into games because they are engaging and challenging. They let my young scatterbrained mind focus on one task for hours rather than just futz about being bored as shit and not knowing what to do.

As I got older they became more something to experience emotionally, and my tastes leaned more towards games with deep problems to solve. Not necessarily puzzle games, but more those with tactical problems.

I started playing video games when I was 4 or 5 years old, my father sometimes let me play on his C64 when my mother wasn't around. Then my parents bought a SNES and Mario was my childhood hero. I realized how video games are like an alternative reality. Whenever I turned on the console, I went to this other reality and did all kinds of things I couldn't do in the real world.

I wasn't the most popular guy in school, so I continued to play a lot of video games, just to be in an alternative reality where I can be whoever I want to be. Final Fantasy VIII became my save harbor.

When I turned 16, I changed a lot. I realized that everything is possible, so I decided to have a few versions of me. There's the true one and a lot of other personalities just to show people what they want to see, so I can have a successful social life without showing them the real me. I also decided to lose most of my emotions, makes everything easier.

It must have been at that time, when I stopped playing for fun. Now I only play to be the best or at least better than my opponents. I mainly play DotA and Dota 2, CS 1.6 and CS:GO and other "competetive" games. I only have fun, when I'm winning.

I was raised on video games. They fuelled my love for music, exploration, and virtually everything available in this world. The high notes that are reached in video games cannot be replicated by anything else, in my mind. As I was growing up, I noticed that everyone had to 'pretend' more. It doesn't matter what you enjoy. Whether you're into a sport like Badminton alongside popular jocks, or you love video games while the intellectual crowd is busy picking apart books (not that there is anything wrong with that). I realized that I was pretending to love things that I didn't care about. I realized that, regardless of the stupid 'Art or Not' debate, or the legitimacy of video games as a medium, they meant THE WORLD to me.

They were my dream! I wanted to make great video games and I wanted to play great video games. With my friends, or alone, while appreciating a great storyline/gameplay blend, and yes, I worship the soundtracks like no tomorrow. Everything is there for me, and it's what makes me hate watered down, and over processed garbage that is spewed out. It makes me hate what the industry has become, but also keeps me going since it means that there's room for upward mobility.

That's why I'm working here and that's why I'm working for you guys. I just needed to know that you guys were still out there.

I fucking loved Brutal Legend just because it was what it was. Fucking glorious metal, amazing storyline (albeit too short,) great humor, the landscapes were also just as fantastic, it's the kind of game I wish there was a sequel to without EA's grubby hands all over it.
Granted, that's not why I got into vidya. I got into it from playing a shitload of GB games when I was like, three. Been infatuated with them ever since, and I'll try ever single genre of games, fuck being strapped down to one kind of game.

First game I ever played was KotOR. The original, of course, not this new abomination. I loved it, I loved the characters, the story, and the gameplay. I loved escaping into a new universe, learning all I could about it before doing everything I could in it. I'm currently taking classes leaning C# and trying to get into game development, and it saddens me to think that I may have to work for a soulless organization like EA or Activision, writing code for uncreative games like Call of Duty '13. Seeing companies like Bioware and Capcom go to shit honestly makes me feel awful, but even now there is hope in man. I've been playing video games since I was 3 years old, 20 now. I remember back when my brother used to play Splatterhouse 2 all day and I'd watch as a kid, I'd even attempt to play it too. Although the hilarious thing I remember my brother telling me was that my first video game ever was actually Robocop vs. Terminator. I grew up on SNES games like Kirby and also Genesis games like Battletoads and Double Dragon. I grew along side a neighbor playing these games, and there was something just so magical about bonding with a friend and enjoying these rich experiences. I remember the nightmare fuel that was resident evil remake, because I was still pretty young when that came out, I remember skiing across the map and flying in tribes, I remember staying up all night with my friend playing Morrowind and spellcrafting the most insane spells, telling him where all these cool places were. I remember being absorbed into Baldur's Gate I and II, loving all the characters and dialogue. I love video games, I may not have any other passions besides music and guitar, but video games will forever be in my heart until the day I die.

I find that playing games with an open mind is the best for me. I don't listen to /v/ unless a vast amount of evidence is presented (like ME3). I played ME3 anyway and found bits I really enjoyed despite the game overall being a trainwreck. I guess I just like to focus on positive bits of a game while not dismissing negative aspects but acknowledging them and wondering how they could be better.

I grew up on the Intellivision with my dad. He'd always win all the time, just like when he'd force me outside to play basketball and frisbee golf. I got a hand me down NES with Duck Hunt/Super Mario Bros., Top Gun, and Super Mario Bros. 2. My light guns never worked but I didn't care much.

I used to have to play on a time limit. An hour and my dad's house and like ten minutes every two hours at my mom's. The NES was at my mom's. One time, I beat Mousey and the door didn't appear. One summer, after I got an N64, I borrowed Super Mario 64 from my brother (sort of, I've know him since I was a baby). I was supposed to keep to the time limit but my mom was at work and that was the first game I ever beat.

Resident Evil is a series close to my heart because it scared the shit out of me as a kid but I loved watching my dad beat it.

When I was in high school I was heavily into JRPGs. One of my friend's favorite games was Xenogears and I managed to find it shortly after breaking up with my first girlfriend. It definitely helped me through the pain. It made me forget because it's world was so rich.

I still play World Series Baseball 2 on a Sega Saturn with my dad at least once a week. Almost all of my friends I have because of Pokemon and Metroid Fusion.

It's the escapism, I guess. I think that's true for any sort of game that's any degree of 'immersive' and puts you into a world and tells a story. Step out of your shoes and into those of a dude in space, trapped on some spaceship/station where shit went to hell. Into the shoes of a knight fighting to save the world. Of the leader of a grand army.

You get to do things and experience things you can't in real life - either because they don't exist, or they're things you wouldn't do. You get to experience a story told in the most intimate of ways - as a part of it yourself, rather than passively watching or reading.

And, for some games, it's for the experience of playing together with your friends. Whether it's to build some structure, to fight off some foe and survive, or beat their brains in, heh.

I dunno, like I said, it's hard to put into words, but I like the exploration, the story, learning about a new world. It's like that whole "each book is a new world for you to discover!" shit they tell kids to encourage them to read. But waaay more literal, because often enough, it is a world you can wander at your own will.

From dominating enemies to feeling totally helpless.
From fear to terror to horror.
From helping people on a personal level to mass genocide.
From grand adventures to simulating jobs.

Little details.

I remember doodling in my notebooks, late nights playing 2 player Mario World, speed running Sonic games, my first 3D game on Playstation. I have so many fond memories.

I'm making a game so people can have fun and experience those things. I won't even sell it, but that doesn't mean I'm not putting my all into it.

Don't worry, dude. Some people are still in it for the fun. I'm going to do this for the rest of my life.

I play them to escape. To unwind. To revel either in the rich narrative universe crafted for the player, or just some fun-ass mechanics. On occasion, just for the soundtrack if it's exceptionally well-done.

Prototype: LOVE that shit. It had its problems, but was one of the most amazing "go fucking nuts" sandboxes I've ever played. Cave Story: original, tugs at your emotions at times, great soundtrack, and plays like a modern classic. Rhythm Heaven et al: unbelievably catchy, and more rhythm/music games should take cues from it. Or not, I dunno if anyone but the batshit insane team currently doing it could do that formula justice.

But perhaps the most amazing moments I've ever had in games have come from the multiplayer.

Last year I got FlatOut 2 on a Steam sale for myself and a few friends and we all gave it a go. It was my first shot at it, and after having a little fun with the single player we dove into multiplayer. Multiplayer was pretty good all round, but then we discovered all the vehicles are unlocked for multiplayer by default, including basically God's own car, the Flatmobile. That thing is literally a jet on wheels. We completely abandoned the notion of seriously running races and instead took turns barrel rolling out of bounds and trying to joust each other midair across huge jumps. I don't think I've laughed harder in my life.

I forgot to mention how much fun it is exploiting glitches in the Grand Theft Auto series.

Like making people get crushed by touching a train that isn't even moving or running outside the police station by going through the wall.

The most fun I had in Liberty City Stories was seeing if that train glitch still worked. And it did.

I play all kinds of games. Sports games, racing games, adventure games, strategy games, shooters, platformers, 4X, space sims etc..

However, these days I enjoy the games with momentum and speed. I bought a PSP to play Wipeout on the go. Did all the fucking sidequests and collected everything on Infamous series because it gave me an excuse to just run around the city jumping from building to building. Mirrors Edge was another game that I enjoyed immensely. Last of all, I still play Spiderman 2 on the PS2 every once in a while and do nothing but just swing around stopping random criminals on the street.

I guess what attracted me to the world of gaming was the feeling of freedom and the ability to do things that I can not do in real life. Now if you will excuse me, I will go back to AAAAAAAAAAAaAAAAaaAAA to beat that goddamn level and get that damn high score.

A second fond memory is of playing Monster Hunter online with one of the same guys. I don't know how familiar you are with the mechanics, but there was one incident where we were fighting a high-rank Basarios. It roared upon entering rage mode, meaning its animation timeout was reduced and the stun from the roar hadn't worn off on my friend by the time it started to charge.

Said friend was also wearing gunner armor and down by half his lifebar, so the charge would've easily taken him out. I, standing nearby, had somehow avoided the roar's radius, was wielding a hammer, and open to act. As one of my quickest and smartest emergency assessments ever, I realized that I could take the blow, having thicker armor and a full health bar. I sprinted the short distance to my friend, unsheathed the hammer mid-stride, and uppercut him in a beautiful arc over the incoming Basarios, leaving him clear of the threat and taking the full brunt of the impact myself, not much the worse for wear.

I will remember that moment until the day I die, and of all things I wish for, it's for games with amazing emergent co-op scenarios to have some sort of universal quick saveable replay feature.

So yeah, I play games for things like that.

I already have an overactive imagination, delving into all of these other worlds and realities makes me think about all the characters and possibilities in each one, as well as providing me a challenge and mysteries to unravel. Even if the game doesn't provide me that, it might provide a chance to do something I may never do (like make a 700+HP racing Ford GT and drive it.) One other thing I have to say I love the most is when a dev plants a bunch of easter eggs in their game, or one big secret room thanking the player with a big picture of the dev team. Stuff that shows that the folks making the game are having as much fun as we are playing it.
I think that's part of why I'm worried about the state of the industry. Easter eggs, fun little hidden things, all of that seem to be going by the wayside in exchange for ALL SRS BSNS NO FUN ALLOWED.
It's a shame, I love games that constantly change it up and poke fun at themselves.

Got into video games as a kid simply because they're fun. They're always there to have fun. Dependable. Not because I was an outsider, but I would become wrapped up in my games as a kid. I was even hospitalized for a bowel blockage as a result of not taking time to shit because I didn't want to get away from my games

It's been a while since I've really felt swept up in games though. My major experiences as a teen were mostly with SNES RPGs.

The last games I really got wrapped up in were Thief 3 (the high tension of sneaking around, very immersive), Dwarf Fort (making my own civilizations), and Mount and Blade (very rewarding feeling of growth)

Now I'd say I mostly play them as a distraction from my life. Both distraction and the feeling that I can always progress in video games (get the next level, get better at playing, get more powerful)--it's nice that VG is always there to give me a feeling of progression, when in other areas of my life I feel like I'm treading water

I understand where you are coming from better than anybody, man. Regarding reviews (general public or professional), I'm not big on the '1 to 10' scale, mainly because anything below a 7 (or in some cases higher) is discarded almost instantaneously. A new rating website that I would enjoy is one that zones in on pros/cons, and describes what kind of gamer this game may appeal to, and which features may strengthen the enjoyment for said player. I would like to work on a gaming website down the road with some of my colleagues. In Mass Effect 3's case, I feel insanely bad for the writers that were striving to make this game good, but were forced (via multiple overwrites) to churn in an inconsistent piece of work.

I don't even remember exactly how I started with videogames. I remember, while I was growing up, my family had bought a TI-99/4A, and that was definitely my first experience with videogames - though I don't really remember any of them too well, just playing them. From there, we wound up with an NES, and eventually with Super Mario Bros. 1-3.
The NES was my go-to item for entertainment; I had friends, but not many, and I didn't have people over very often. That's pretty much how I started - boredom, some introvertedness, and a lot of free time.

As for why I still play, I guess it's because there are still good games that come out. Games that offer interesting premises, mechanics, plot, etc. I can't quantify what catches my interest, exactly. I can tell you I don't care about Call of Duty/Modern Warfare/etc.

And, though this is kind of a weird reason, another thing that influences my desire to play a game is watching others play. I don't care about spoilers, and that means I'm able to watch far more of a game I've never played than most people would probably care to - and if I see the person playing, and if I think or feel like they aren't exploring enough or playing well enough or paying enough attention to their surroundings, it motivates me to play the same game, just to prove to myself that I can "play better" than them. ...I guess that's sort of arrogant of me? Our social network's expanded a bit recently thanks to Spiral Knights, too. The thing I remember that made me a "gamer", even though I played and loved pokemon and can still remember how the packaging smelled when I unboxed that yellow gameboy pocket and red version of pokemon at christmas all that time ago, and playing and trading with my friends, was Halo 1.

Every other weekend my friends (between 8 and 16, depending)and I would go to someones house, get a truely staggering ammount of mountain dew and cool ranch doritoes and hook up a LAN and play huge halo matches.

Couch Co-op was and is a huge thing for me.

Sadly, that went by the wayside with halo 2 and xbox live.

I had a brief resurgance in college playing wow with my bud at his place, he tanked, I healed, we couldn't be stopped.

These days I kick it with RPG's on the DS, a little LOL when I need my MMO itch scratched, Mass Effect when I'm at my buds.

Its just not the same game when you can't sit in a basement with your friends yelling obceneties at eachother until paul sees a light in the window and goes goes "did someone just pull in the driveway?" And you say "no dude, that's the sun." And that's when you know its time to pack up and go get mcdonalds before you go home.

The highlight of my life revolved around video games. Getting lost in different worlds felt like an extension of myself. I could imprint something onto this life and express myself, without having to deal with the mess that is the world.

I went through another phase where I played a lot of online games, and that was really special too. I made a whole brigade of new friends, and I found myself to be in constant awe. The concept of sharing the experience of life with someone else through a game, that's something that has always been remarkable to me.

I guess it kind of all subsided after the first year of high school, but then I played Mother 3, and that changed my life. I can write essays about this, and I have, but in a nutshell, it opened my eyes to many things about gaming, myself, and the world.

Everyone that I've mentioned has moved on. You know? Those friends from more than a decade ago, where are they now? Those people I met online, I don't even know what happened to them. I guess it doesn't matter that much, but I treasure those times with all my heart. Wouldn't have had it any other way.

Well, my Grandma bought me a Gameboy when I was six, and she bought me the SNES port of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. I know nostalgia goggles are welded to my face as I say this, but that is my favorite game. I recently listened to the music for the game on the internet, and I started crying. Exploring. I like seeing new worlds and how they're put together. I like finding little hidden secrets all over the place. A friend and I even went into the Knoxx DLC area and learned, by accident, that we could launch a Runner into a non-playable area of the map if we used a really weak Sledge's Shotgun. And when it survived the trip, we were able to teleport to the seats and explore that area as well (before shortly finding where the ground collision suddenly stopped!) Having the freedom to explore and screw around and sometimes see behind the scenes, that's something I find fun about gaming.

When I turned six I was given a Game Boy, at that time we were on a vacation in Spain. So my first game was this bootleg "lods of gams in one", now most of them sucked arse one game stood out, it was a port of Ducktales. I guess that game guided me to love the vidya.
Currently playing MGS2 and having a blast, I love the lively characters, the cheesy plot and those little secrets that makes the game feel special.

I hope your someone plays your game and grows to love it, that is the best thing to ever happen a game.

That helps very, very much. Super Mario Bros. was the funnest thing for me and every other kid I grew up with. Alone or with other people, it just made it all worthwhile.

As for watching other people play, I can genuinely say that I ADORE watching my friends (or even strangers) play video games. Going back to the game, and realizing that I could trump it with ease, or figure out one little quirk that they didn't manage to get the hang of, makes it even better. Maybe it's just some weird obsession, or maybe video games are just that great. Thank you for helping me out. Your response was awesome, and I love you (and everyone else here)!

I'm having a hard time finding a way to relevantly express it, but something I miss about older or more technically limited systems was watching how developers worked within the restrictions. I have a huge nostalgia boner for N64-era graphics, not just for the nostalgia but because some games (particularly Rare's) had an amazingly stylized aesthetic to them despite being blocky as hell. I never managed to invest myself properly in Torchlight, but one thing I loved about that game was it was reminiscent of that style. Fewer polygons, but more stylized.

As tech continues to balloon and we continue to bump against the ceiling of what we can achieve by going with the highest-budget graphics possible from PC through PS3 down to the goddamn iPhone, it's been a genuine relief to see 2D games coming back into fashion over the last while, and Spiral Knights is the latest thing to scratch that "stylized low-poly" itch. I intend to continue monitoring the scene for such releases as they occur because they are eye candy to me more than stuff like Uncharted ever will be.

Sonic 2 got me into video games. All that going fast, the cool levels, the music - I fell in love. I've always been a Sonic fag, 3&K is one of my favourite games ever. As long as some of us hold out, only buying the best vidya, then we can at least show that we won't accept anything less than the best.

I got into videogames playing Mario Bros and Startropics with my mom when I was 4. Mario was okay, but Startropics was amazing, and definately had a strong impact on my taste in video games. Strange tombs and islands to explore, a mystery to unfold, and tough gameplay with weird and terrifying bosses. The game felt like a great adventure.

There's lots of things that I love about games though, and sometimes I'm not sure about what I enjoy the most. There's the rush of adrenaline. There's nothing like the feeling of mounting tension as every ounce of your energy is focused into one effort: not dying. The rush you get when you reach safety and can finally stop holding your breath is unlike any other.

Then there's the shenanigans. The things you laugh about with friends. Blowing things up, smacking hookers around, flipping cars off bridges, laying a billion mines and lauching yourself into space. Having ridiculous fun in a way that is impossible outside of games.

At the end of the day though, my favorite experiences are the ones that you get completely lost in. Games that take you to another world rich in beauty, with moving stories and characters. Some games transcend the feeling of mere entertainment. They feel like real places you've visited, with real people you've met and an adventure you shared in. It's pretty darned rare to find one that strikes that chord with me, but it's what I play games for.

Honestly I'd say the worlds of video games are the fertile fantasylands of thousands, so keep at it.

What's getting in the way of your motivation? Creator's block?

If this doesn't get in the way of the thread too much, but what do you think about "immersion"? It's a very tricky subject. I love getting swept up in the vidya feeling of "wow, this is amazing, this world and sometimes a game will really affect me, but I think oddly the participatory nature of VG makes them less "immersive". Does one really forget about turning pages when they're reading? I'd say books have felt made me feel about 2-3x more involved than VG. This is also why more linear narratives oddly tend to be more immersive, since there's less friction from participating, and creating convincing stories from random generation is hard

Yes it can, I don't know about what the "bare minimum" is but you can get buildups which can eventually explode your intestine

They x-rayed the blockage and I remember it being quite impressive. I had been taking laxitives too before that, then when that didn't work I was put in a hospital and a tube was put up my nose to feed me liquid foods and laxatives

There is so much I want to say in response to this. First off, Mother 3 is one of my favourite games. I love it to death. Secondly, we've all had those amazing childhood memories playing video games with friends who are now strangers, and strangers who are now friends, and everything in between. Those moments will come again, I assure you. Getting immersed in something amazing, or getting dragged back into the 'vidya' world thanks to yet another gateway game, it all happens. I be at the skull of life but I have some valuable information for you.

Gamers want to be left alone and do things themselves. Doesn't matter the game.

Developers over the years (DNF being the biggest example) started feeling as if they were a semi-invisible hand always pushing players forward, showing them AWEOMSE CUTSCENES/SCRIPTED EVENTS and whatever.

I think even developers that don't believe in that crap got sucked into that cinematographic "AAA" experience.

And that is what is what is sucking the life away of games.

Don't try to impress gamers.

Put something in front of them while making yourself completely invisible as a designer.

Let them go from there

I work in a grocery store. I hate it. All day long I stack and rotate produce to earn a meager pay to afford my apartment in a town where there is nothing to do.

I have been given no chances at education, for I can't afford it and my broke parents earned way too much a few years back for me to be able to get government assistance. There is no industry here, and I live a life of misery.

I'm a writer myself, and as you probably know, have no self-esteem and are generally a recluse. And starting today, right now, I am starting to make my very own games on gamemaker, to achieve something of a dream, to escape the awful life I lead.

The industry may be cold, but at least it isn't produce.

Another thing I love about games is digging through archives of them from 5, 10, 20 years ago that I may have missed at the time.

One day I just idly downloaded and tried out the Pac-Man 2 rom, excpecting to find yet another port of the arcade game I never really clicked with. What I got instead was an insane, hilarious, creative, awkwardly designed adventure game. I have played through that thing at least 3 times now and I STILL FIND NEW EASTER EGGS EVERY TIME.

It's like finding a time capsule from the Victorian era in your backyard.

My father is not what one would call an emotional man. That is to say, he's quite cold. He's not a man who hugs, or anything.

Anyway, he's a macfag. When I started getting into gaming, he sorta watched from afar - until he found out about Blizzard.

We played Diablo - I'd sit next to him and offer advice. We went throught he first game, the second, and then the expansion came out. It was pretty intense fighting Baal. We knew what was riding on that fight, we'd both happily engrossed ourselves in the lore.

When we won, and the ending played, dad sorta stared at the screen. He's sorta balding, a little pudgy, looks like a real businessman. But for that one moment, his expression softened. He took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.

"Wow."

It's a really tough line to tread, because 'good graphics' aren't necessarily bad, but watching one of my colleagues sons play 'Gears of War 3' with a blank stare and no amount of enthusiasm really got to me. Even with limitations, so many developers did SO much. You really have to love something to the imagine, and you really have to put some heart in the game, so that people know that all those little, special things left in the game are meant to strengthen the immersion. As much as /v/ will hate me, I have been loving Fez. It's a game that revels in artistry - the art design is beautiful, with little references to games gone by; the sound work and music is so good I could just listen to the OST all the time. But Fez is a puzzle game, and it's a damn good one. There comes a point, around halfway through your first run, where you start questioning EVERYTHING you see. Because there are hidden puzzles everywhere, and if you want the full ending, you have to solve them all. You sit down with a pen and paper and work through this comprehensive language, a huge monolith, all sorts. You reach a point where you think 'I can't solve anymore of these puzzles, I've been through and tried them all and I just do not get them.' So you've got the number of cubes required, and you go to see the end of the game.
Then you start a New Game+ and suddenly you're captured again, because now there's a way to solve those puzzles you couldn't do before. That's what's so good about Fez, this sense of discovery.
A game that makes you want to dive straight back in after you 'finish' it is a damn good game, and I'd advise you all to play it.

I'm playing it as we speak, actually, and I fully share the exact same sentiments. I actually just discovered a new area, and it's really amazing. It's the one with the teal and pink palette where you only see a little bit around Gomez, and the blocks appear/disappear to the beat of the music.

I wish video game reviews had more to do with the substance of the game, with some honest critiques, even with opinions mixed in. NEVER expect anything other than the best. Complaining about a crappy product is the best thing you can do. Chances are that a crappy 'blockbuster' game had enough manpower to be great. Even games with their shortcomings are salvaged if there was enough heart put into the game to create a decently satisfying and charming adventure.

You are the invisible tour guide, the voiceless storyteller, the distant dungeon master.
It's difficult to be in game development, the long hours, the frustrating tedious work, but it's really a thankless sacrifice for that lucky guy who picked it up on day one and loved it to pieces from then on. by that point you'll have moved on to a different project but don't forget all the good you had done by pouring soul and sweat into that game. and your failings, they only serve as a learning tool to do it better next time around.

Oh, I didn't start on puzzle games. The first game I remember playing was Strider for the NES. I took a look at it again recently and I honestly can't believe I got as far as I did, that game's brutal. Hmm, the best video game experience I've had... well, surprisingly that's a recent thing. Journey. Mind-blowingly beautiful game, and emotionally powerful to boot. Such joy, such wonder, it's just amazing that people can make games like that.

I don't think the video game industry is in a dark place. No, the entire nation is in a dark place. The video game industry still produces gems, regularly enough so that the average gamer can find well-made games to take up all their time. There's just a split now, between mainstream and small developers. I suppose you could say the market is shifting.

Well, you don't know how frustrating is when your character moves by itself and falls every 5 seconds. I got all the stars anyways.

I never knew about more consoles until I was like in middle school, so I didn't even bother with anything else. That's why I'm a Nintendo Fan.

And now, I play every videogame I can find or play. I never was very rich, and now I ain't either. The only resources I have to play videogames are a Wii, a 3ds (I got it as a present from my mother), and a kind of shitty laptop. But well, I have played many things and even if its a pain to play a lot of games on 15 fps, I still do. Why? Because I love them, I love the music, to explore new worlds, and to fantasize in a more interesting world than ours.

There are different types of immersion, for me. Video game wise, I've been immersed as hell while playing Mario Kart 64 during an all-nighter with my cousins. Forget what anyone says, I was Donkey Kong riding in a custom kart that night.

A perfect blend of story-telling and gameplay (with freedom), or even just an amazing and gripping story (with the player in mind) can keep me amazingly immersed, but still, different strokes for different folks right? At about 8, I really started to pester my parents for vidya. Dad noticed I had an interest, and one of my fondest memories with him was playing Myst and Riven together. My parents had a ban on consoles, so, through luck and cunning, I discovered I could get games on the PC.

I was always I played a lot of RTS games (Age of Empires II, Age of Mythology, Empire Earth II, Rise of Nations) and god, I loved them all. From there I went into FPS, Medal of Honor Allied Assault being my favorite, then to RPGs (Earthbound is my current favorite), and here I am.

I was always kind of a separated kid, and without some guidance, I'm worried I would be a complete social outcast. So video games are only a natural thing to me, I guess.

I guess what I love about video games is the challenge. They give you a challenge, and varying amounts of help, and say "go do it, you have what it takes". And you know and understand that. Real life, you don't know if you have the skillset to solve every problem you're handed. Video games, you do.

It's the problem solving journey.

Everything was a big surprise for me: Getting my first Fire Flower, discovering that Koopa shells could be kicked into walls and BOUNCE back (Boy did I die a lot because of that!), transitioning from ground levels to water levels to FIRE levels. And then the BOWSER FIGHTS. My younger self was blown away. Ever since then... Ever since then. I had grown to love video games. That's how it began. I still love video games to this day, even though I get mad and nitpick over every little thing like most of /v/.

But it's out of passion.

My older sister used to play the 'hard' levels of Donkey Kong Country for me (I've managed to master them now). Eventually had a NES and played Tank/Battle City until buying 3 systems and more than 10 years later. I was always the green tank.

Cousins rented a Rock Man 4 and got interested watching them play, but I couldn't because I was too scared of the laser platform that could insta-kill me. Eventually got brave enough to play and even bought Rock Man 3. Even though it was in Japanese which I know jack shit of, I could understand one important part of the story. During the credit roll where Proto's theme was played in full that piece of music made me realize the reason why he saved me from the rubble and why his face was shown in the end was because Proto was related to Rock and was probably his brother, which he turned out to actually be.

So...basically vidya gave me the best memories I could have, educated me, protected me, and now I'm going to school for computers because of vidya eating Gorilla Munch and typing this.

Ever since then vidya has been mah nigga. My favorite being FF2/4.

Tell ya what tho Sprite. The industry is beginning to scare me. I'm having a hard time believing developers are in it for the games anymore.

As fanboyish as this sounds, the only time I get the feeling that the game came first is when I play Nintendo games, most recently being Kid Icarus. When I played it I can just tell the people who made it had fucking fun doing it. I don't get that feel often anymore.

I've been an advocate of video games since I played the very first Zelda when I was young. Everything up until the original Xbox was hardcore Nintendo (Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon ftw), but since broadening my tastes in video games, I've figured out many reasons why I enjoy playing them.

I think it's amazing how all these different elements combine to make a single product that immerses you in it's atmosphere. That alone, is reason enough for me to play games because I love to just go nuts over how much talent it takes.
But what I love more than that, is how games can be whatever you want them to be. They can be a time waster, an obsession, an escape, or a stress reliever (and giver sometimes), as well as many other things. You can do whatever you want in whatever game you want to do it in.

The games that have always made me nerdgasm the hardest have been ones like Skyrim and Majora's Mask. We all know how great Skyrim was at making you feel like you were inside the game, but Majora's Mask has always touched me as a gamer. It has one the most most complex, and moving, plots I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. And it was original! Nothing like that had been done before (the 3 Day thing). No other game has FORCED me to replay several areas of the game and I not get pissed off. The environment just felt so alive, and with the threat of the moon I felt like I was actually in danger. I got scared when I was on the last day and that music sped up.

I like games because they take me places and connect me to the world and characters the developers have created. That doesn't mean I'm above playing games competitively, I've dabbled a bit in Starcraft, League of Legends, and a few gaming tournaments, but the competitive aspect brings me back to reality and reminds me that it's a game. I enjoy those less than games like Zelda, The Elder Scrolls, Catherine, and the Tales games.

I think the most likely reason I got into video games was because of my dad. He's loved computers since he was in high school ('82 or thereabouts) and has always worked on them, with them, etc. Of course we had computers in the house when I was a kid (born '90) and my dad liked shooters (doom, quake, hexen) and RPGs and adventure games, and he would play point and click games with my mom and puzzle games, (phantasmagoria, 13th hour, etc)

My family was a real big disney family so my first games were Mickey Mouse learning games on DOS, as well as dinosaur learning games (I'm not sure if I liked dinosaurs before jurassic park, but I'm sure it was a factor) but in '96 I think the Star Wars special edition came out in theaters and I immediately was a fan, and got every kind of star wars game. Dark Forces 2 was one of my favorites, and I even liked the shitty ones like force commander and gungan frontier. I got into half-life a couple years after it came out and I was a big valvedrone for years, I loved playing CS and DoD even though I was shit.

Then came Diablo II (I skipped 1 somehow and missed out on something great) and it's been back and forth between half-life, diablo 2, and jedi outcast for about ten years now. Currently I'm playing Borderlands again because I'm pretty psyched for the sequel.

You are absolutely right. Video games really are everything. The spice to a great day, or something to keep your mind off of a crummy situation, and of course, the greatest inspiration of all time when you need to reignite that spark.

Majora's Mask is one of my favourite games, and the NPC interaction (along with the amount of side quests) made me have a similar nerdgasm to yours, I'm assuming. That Anju/Kafei side quest really was something else, and it all added to the bizarre, and somewhat sinister (but motivational) undertone the game was pressing throughout. I'm a sucker for many of those games (especially the Lego ones). I love video game anticipation almost as much as I love playing them. It's just such a great thing, and with every tidbit and trailer, it just amps everything up, honestly.

Here you go man, Garry's Mod was why I got into gaming. So much fun and freedom and imagination involved in creating the game and making your own fun aswell.

Well guys, I started this thread a broken, sad guy with his back against the wall. Tons of stress, lack of sleep, and having to deal with failure a million times never bode well for a guy who was never all that strong to begin with.

And here I am now. You better believe me when I say that I'm bawling my eyes out. I've been up for more than 30 hours, but I want to run a marathon right now. I want to take on the world.

I've said this so many times, but you guys are my inspiration. I love video games to death, but I love fans like you more. All of those stories, and all of those games mentioned. All of those tales about families and old friends and old summers and experiencing certain games for the first time. They all resonate with me, and they all inspire me. I love you all so damn much. Thank you for motivating me. Thank you for reminding me about something that I knew every since I was a kid.

I will work my ass off for each and every one of you. It's the least that I can do. I'll make a thread during E3 (hopefully, I will be there), and I'll tell you guys where I worked, what projects (cancelled and not cancelled), and I'll share a few music files with you guys too.

I started way back in the late 80s, by the time arcades started to decline. Pratically lived inside arcades ever since my childhood, until all of them closed down. Still play a lot, mostly arcade-like games (hardly ever any story focused games, like rpgs and such, though I do play those as well).

I guess I play video games to break them. Look into the rules that govern them and own them. Find all the difficult shit and just do them out of spite because fuck games if they think they can tell me what I can't do.

That and to make my opponents feel bad. Nothing will ever beat the feeling of playing fighting games when you have superior strategies and destroy the opposition, only to teach them all what you did and wait for the holes they will find in your tricks, and you have to find different ways to break them.

When i was young videogames only interested me because of the entertainment value, similiar to books and movies. As i grew older i got interested in the underlying mechanics beneath the game.
why does mario jump when you bress A? what is so satisfying about gaining points in asteroids?

I got more and more interested, until i went to school and started programming. Sadly i had a few hickups and went into deep depression, but recently i got a job as a programmer in a big company.
I wouldn't have this job now if i didn't find gamemechanics interesting, since normal programms are very much like games.

Also, with games like Monkey Island, Sam & Max, DoTT i found genuine love for wacky humor, which led me to read discworld and hitchhikers guide.
Sorry if this sounds too much like asskissing.

One big reason I got into videogames was that, limited though my access to them often was due to my unenthusiastic parents, and few as my tech-savvy and up-to-date friends were, playing bad, old vidya was all I had to do. Myriad, boring reasons I'm not self-indulgent enough to speak of in detail led to me being the fringe member of a fringe group in every social circle I knew. Faced with that stark lack of people I wanted to hang out with for more than ten minutes, it's no wonder I wasted days playing Warcraft III on a computer that could barely run it.

I didn't even appreciate videogames until recently. I was just the smart kid in the miserable public school system of a miserable suburb rife with the finest products of Australian sports culture. Hate to be so negative, it's great that everyone else has this vast wealth of nostalgic experiences and shit to reflect on but maybe some of you need to be more realistic, as well.

Challenging and interactive. As I kid, I much preferred to solve mysteries and make great discoveries in King's Quest than see some actor or animated character do it in a movie. My brothers would go watch Star Wars, but I spent my time scribbling unintelligible notes through Myst. "The End" held (and still holds) much more impact for me if I getting to there was more than a passive experience.

And today, I find my experience driven by those tenets of multifaceted storytelling aligned by the player and tests of skill or wit that put the player in the same mindset as the character. I play Adam "Dredd" Jenson, someone else plays Adam "Deckard" Jenson, and another plays Adam "Stansfield" Jenson; no interpretation is wrong, and each reveals a shard of the 'core' Jenson, and a side of those who surround him. I sunder Alduin, yet I remember that "heroic" scripted event far less than doing the dialog-free "Final Invitation" arena in MHP3rd where I finished with less than ten seconds left.

Carving my own tales of triumph and intrigue - though with another's chisel and tablet - makes them all the more personal than reading the trivial etchings of a stranger.

We only owned a couple games, but we'd rent games occasionally. Those games were such a contrast to anything I'd seen or experienced before... It was exhilarating.

After that I began to visit the library where one of the guys who worked there had installed a SNES emulator. This was once again an incredible experience for me, as now I could play games without requiring my parents money.

Years after that I met an interesting person. He was a rich old man who was very devout. Incredibly kind and generous. He devoted a lot of time to his community. At his house he had THOUSANDS of games, over 10 televisions, and literally every console created to that point. I'll bet you're already preparing your child rapist jokes, but yes, he did let young people (roughly age 10-18) come over and play his games for free. Before anyone asks, he never molested anyone. Anyway, he always had the newest games and systems (I remember playing the Japanese GBA before it was even localized here). He even had a machine that would plug into the top of the SNES and make roms. I used that machine until I found proper websites to download from.

I am now a PC gamer who has still has fun playing video games, without the need to have it as a source of entertainment. My only problem is that the awe I felt as a child rarely occurs to me anymore. Games are just too casualized and generic for the most part. A game comes along every once and a while that catches me off guard though. Unique experiences. Unforgettable memories. I have faith that so long as there are players there will be developers that will keep their player's wants in mind.

I came back to check in (I'll finish the rest of my work in the morning). By the way, all of the responses were very, very touching.

First off, keep going in the original Legend of Zelda! Give it an hour or two, and you'll be absolutely hooked.

It was great to read your different thoughts through the generations. We've all been bitter about certain games, but it's nice to see that you enjoyed virtually everything, especially in the GBA category (I think that GBA and the DS have some of the greatest libraries in gaming history, respectively).

Keep taking video game courses, and if your heart is set on it, get into the field. Pursue a degree of your choice (video game related, if you want to) while pursuing a career, and with enough patience, you'll find an opening.

It was a wonderful story man. Thank you, and thank everyone here.

But it wasn't until I played spyro that it became one of my major interests. I loved spyro so much. I played those games over and over again, they had so much more depth than crash bandicoot even though it was less popular. I was so young when I played that game but it caused me to be so much more analytical. Another one was monster rancher, this game got me into the perps genre
