It seems we've sort of hit a plateau in graphical development. Remember the massive jump between the PS1 to the PS2? The difference in graphics if they were to release a new console currently wouldn't be as impressive. Thats why PC gaming, with continously improving grafix is probably the best idea.

Fun Fact, this Map runs better than Skyrim and Crysis 1

i ran this map in 1080p, with a GTX 570/i5 2500k, i got 60/70fps on average, the only time it dropped to 40fps was when i looked at the waterfall (particle shadows are to blame for that)
and near the tessalated water i got around 50 frames

The ones that do actually do this shit... DO HAVE GRAPHICS LIKE THAT.
Look at things like Natural Selection 2, it DOES have graphics that are good and its indie.
Most indie devs don't want to try to get it, thats why they don't have it.

Also many others focus on optimizing their games to run on weak computers.

Good graphics and good game design are not mutually exclusive ideas but frankly the graphics guys dont care about game design, they just slap FPS's onto their graphics engines and the people who design good games do so without amazing graphics.

And considering games are a primarily interactive medium you should really stop and consider which is more important. If you want really good graphics at the expense of interesting interactivity go watch a CG fest movie.

That concept didn't even EXIST 20 years ago, the first 3D games weren't that polished as you would like to think because they had no real standards to work with.
Also companies cutting costs to save money and hamper quality is true for everything from Movies, TV shows, and music.

Pretty simple, hardware limitations.

The specs of the consoles haven't changed since their release. The power of the hardware you have to work with if you want to sell a game on a console has been static as a result.

So when I make a multiplat game, I can't design it around a half decent computer made in the past 3 years, I have to design it to play on the hardware in the xbox from 2004.

This means games are much weaker than they could be if hardware was more continually updated.

If I make a game that can only play on the PC, I can only sell it to people who play games on their PC. But if I cripple it by designing it to play with console hardware, I can sell it to console AND PC gamers. More people to sell to will probably mean more sales. Almost definitely once you factor in how the PC market is a minority.

So yeah, the act of owning and using a console as the gaming vehicle of preference means that game designers make games that will play on your hardware.

It could get theoretically more complex than us, but that wouldn't be needed.
What is needed though are things like that game with the melons and christy or whoever. The one where you yell at chip and he dynamically responds about how his relationship is crap or whatever.

AI that can recognize not just choices but any dialogue would be fantastic, not to mention properly responding to the world around them and changes in it.

Bad games are bad for games. Bad games are the fault of the developers. Many of them place too much time and too many resources into making the graphics look good.

The problem is NOT that the graphics themselves, but the investment into making the graphics competitive. The improvement of a graphics engine makes better graphics easier, faster, and therefore cheaper. This gives the devs more time and resources to spend on other things such as gameplay, story, etc.

Never get pissed at the improvement of an engine, or an SDK. Rejoice when work is done on these things, because it makes things better for everyone involved, from the developers to the players.

Want to know the reason flash games are so popular and varied? Because flash is relatively easy to work with. It's not powerful, it's not optimal, hell, it's sluggish and crude as fuck, but people with the desire to make something good, end up making something good.

If you give those same people a tool like this, imagine what they can do.

If you can just upgrade the graphics and put out the same game again then nobody changes anything as the last 6 years of gaming as proven time and time again.

Nobody wants to innovate because that comes with risks, they know for a fact that their game will sell with nothing but a slight graphical upgrade. If you take away that graphical upgrade then you need a new selling point.

That's not true, you actually don't have to innovate at all. You can simply release different levels/story and rebalance some of the numbers.

Games were fun when they were 8Bit and games will continue to be fun so long as they are designed well, regardless of hardware used. Some parts of your CUSTOM BUILT PC will last 5-10 years. Graphics card and CPU for example only 3-4. Also custom built PCs will cost FAR FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR less than pre built ones.

Pre built 2000 $ < Custom 700 $

It's nowhere near as clusterfucky as it used to be. Everything's color coded and tabbed to hell now. Everything comes with instructions with little pictures. It's less complex than a fucking lego set.

Step 1. Make sure every component has access to power.
Step 2. Make sure every component has access to data.
Step 3. Power that bitch up.

Only tricky shit is mistakes like improperly seating memory, and that horrendous creaking sound when you seat the processor and bend the shit out of that lever. But even those things are easily spotted as long as you're not blind.

The thing is the PC is an open system so Piracy is simple. Consoles are closed systems and you need to wait for someone to jail break them then you need to learn to process to jailbreak it which when it first happens can be pretty convoluted and has a chance of bricking your console, plus you lose access to many features and services on the console too and so on. And with each new console release that process only becomes harder and more complex and you lose more and more features and consoles become more internet integrated possibly one day even reaching the point where it doesn't even function without a server connection of some sort.

Consoles being internet enabled closed systems will reach a point where they effectively do not work while jail broken and any work around is not even close to a legitmate version of the OS.

Hell maybe the OS will run remotely in the future but manage the launching of local software. Pirates would be pretty fucked then.

Im not convinced console piracy will ever reach the level of pc piracy just because of the nature of a PC being an open system and a console being a closed system with more web based retrictions being added by the day.

Take away the ability to have new graphics and BAM, their number one priority is gameplay. If they are not forced to go after gameplay they wont. The past 6 years proves that. If graphics is an option they will always take it, removing that option forces gameplay innovation.

I got a launch PS3 (that I bought used later on) and a launch Wii that still work perfectly.
So thats 5 years already with at least 2 more years to come.
