That doesn't justify rehashing level designs, powerups and old strategies.

This isn't the kind of rehash which you would consider binding the games together, they literally take set pieces from earlier games.

Hell, the New Super Mario Bros series takes fucking graphics from the previous title. The Wii game looked just like the DS game, and so does this.

With regards to graphics complaints, it's really tough to show off what anything looks like on the 3DS in 2d. The extra dimension adds so much depth and vibrancy and a crispness that the videos you'll see just can't do justice.

Would it really kill sales if they had different backgrounds this time? The forest world has the EXACT SAME background in had in Wii and the first one. Not to mention the fact they couldn't think of anything better than the same worlds worlds they've had in the last two games.

2D mario games will never be good again, because they lost their tight controls.

In NES, the physics and control was flawless.
In SNES they started to get a bit loose and slippy.
In NSMB, the characters have unnecessary animation and movement all over the place. They slide around like their boots are buttered, and the jump physics is similarly slippery.

They need to take a step backwards if they want to move forwards again.

They've made 75 new IPs since the 2000s.

3D Marios is where innovation is at ('cept G2).

2D Marios are handled by a subpar studio, 2D Marios were good because Shiggy was in them to begin with, he hasn't done a game since Pikmin 2.

What was it missing? The level design was great. It had true challenge in world 8 and 9. The boss fights were good and it was 2D Mario with co-op. The jumps were floaty but no worse than World or All-Stars 3.

OP, I'm a Nintendo fan, and I sort of agree, but I just don't like the New Super Mario Bros series. If anything, I prefer the 3D platformers over the 2D ones. I probably won't be buying this. It just isn't for me.

I mean sure, it will probably be fun, but I really don't see myself spending $40 on it. Hell, I felt disappointed for spending that much on 3D Land.

Each one generally improved over a previous installation, you can't expect people to make up genres for each new game just to make it that extra bit different.

Sequel =/= rehash, but they're obviously going to have very similar elements due to being the same genre, hell even Super Paper Mario mixed things up from TTYD by removing the random encounter turn-based battles.

I play games for the entire experience. And yes, having new characters and story can allow for a much for broader and better gameplay than a character that has been cookie cutted through many genres. Having new interesting characters with new and interesting stories can bring in me into finishing and motivating me to actually play the game.

Oh look it is a mario game, so now you are resolved into doing something to do with jumping, Hey Mario, how do you attack enemies in your platformer, "I jump on them." Hey Mario how do you attack enemies in your RPG, "I jump on them."

But again, just because it's the same characters does not make it a rehash, I mean sure it's more similar because of the same characters, but gameplay can be completely different, Mario Kart to Mario Golf, same characters, completely different gameplay.

And if you don't like those characters then that's fair enough, but don't expect Nintendo to make a Paper Mario RPG without Mario

Actually as the game goes on he gets quite a lot of different move sets, as in most RPG's. Using TTYD he has that hammer with a variety of different moves, his partners have a wide variety across them all and he has Star Powers, each of which is vastly different to the last.

Mario jumping on shit is his "thing" it would be like a game with Kirby but he doesn't eat things. Even if Mario jumping on shit isn't the main plot of that story, he'll still have the ability to do so no matter how minor.

Sure they could use new characters, but as you said it's easy marketing, and at the end of the day even if it was new characters the gameplay and story probably wouldn't change, but the characters would and their backstories, which if you like that in RPG's which I know a lot of people do, then it's understandable. But there are already so many RPG's to choose from that Nintendo would just end up saturating the market even more, especially when they have an incredibly popular game in that same market.

I'm not saying they shouldn't do it, but I see why they don't, and I do really like Paper Mario so I'm not too bothered by it.

As for the moves, the inclusion of a hammer is new as it's only in the Paper Mario series, and he does get quite a lot of companions who are only present in those games, like Vivian in TTYD with all those ghost/fire attacks and that cloudy woman, then that Mouse thief.

Hate it or not that a lot of the characters are similar, the Paper series does have a lot of enemies that are only found in the Paper series.

Epic Yarn was like Doki Doki Panic to SMB2 and Dinosaur Planet to Starfox Adventure, it originally wasn't even a Kirby game.
I don't think Mass attack was a spin off as it was a platformer.
