At least they're trying to add a theme to NSMB2. It actually sounds kinda fun.

NSMB is a nod to SMB

NSMBW is a nod to SMBTLL/2JP

NSMBU is a nod to SMW

NSMB2 is a nod to SMB3

Each one plays slightly differently (though still is classic mario at core) and looks and feels different. Only those that haven't played it would assume that NSMB and NSMBW were that much alike Controls and everything in SMBW were leagues better. NSMB2 has this new coin tactic in it, and U has very nice Backgrounds and the return of the SMW map which hasn't been used since, AND even basic cape mechanics which again haven't been seen in decades!

Rehash my ass. Next thing you know, you are gonna calls 2 and CD Sonic 1 rehashes. Oy...

I'm willing to give New Super Mario Bros and New Super Mario Bros Wii it's credit. It had different music, different levels, different power ups, and fuck, four players on one of them.

It's the sequels where I'm calling foul. I really don''t know what to say other than this is some lazy bullshit. Wii 2 looks a bit different, but no one cares about this fucking platform gimmick. All the unlucky fifth sap is going to do is purposely use it to fuck everyone over anyway.

NSMB2 is where I'm falling foul. It looks the fucking same with more coins. That's your gimmick? Coins? What, is this Sonic the Hedgehog? Jesus H. Christ over the top rope. If there's one thing I don't care about in Mario, it's not the fucking coins. When they put coins in some area for me to collect, I just run on. If I need extra lives that badly, I go to the first level. Give me a break already!

Bringing the Racoon tail isn't doing it for me, Nintendo. Unless you're actually doing something with this coin collection business, I honestly don't care for it.

Now hold on there, if they actually use to raccoon tail to add more to the level i.e. platforming segments in the sky like in SMB3 I'll have nothing against NSMB2.

The Tanooki suit in SM3DL was useless. The game would have worked just as well without it. They just added that shit so nostalgiafags would empty their wallets.

Exactly. We have nostalgia now for games like SM3 & SMW. Kids today are growing up with nostalgia for Halo 1 & GTA:SA. There's no reason to say NSMB won't develop its' own little cult following.

Personally, I think it's just Nintendo playing a safety card. Both franchises are proved to sell, and NSMBU MIGHT be enough to sell the Wii U to some key early adopters. I think the games are fun, but far from the series' high point.

Super Mario 3D Land though, is better than the original Galaxy in my book.

NSMB was always mediocre and they all look the same. Normally every subsequent game managed to look/play different, just look at Paper Mario or 64/Galaxy.

3D on a 2D plane COULD be done good, it's just the art style for the NSMB games are fucking bland and sterile. They feel too 'clean'.

That said, I also prefer stylized 2D sprites and drawings for sidescrollers, but there's so much potential for NSMB to look amazing visually, but it doesn't.

Fun fact, just because Sonic has more of a focus on story doesn't make it better than Mario. Which while there seems to be some story there in it (star children and destiny and such) that thing isn't focused on for Mario much. In fact Sonic's focus on story is one of the main reasons why people don't like it in case you haven't figured that out yet.

From a business standpoint, to not rehash the shit out of this series would be illogical. Personally, I'm not very enthused with these "new" games, and I happened to enjoy NSMBWii and its physics. But a new Mario means a new graphical style and new controls; that's why a new Mario has always been so special. So I look at the 3D series as "the next Mario" and NSMB as a series of products.

When they make another one on Wii U or 3DS, I will agree with you completely. But as it stands now, it's basically the same as Mario Kart, where they have one on each of their consoles. I guess they want this series to represent the Mario franchise first and foremost, so it's a bit unfortunate that they were made so close from each other, but I don't see it as a bad thing as long as they don't pump out one after another on the same platforms.

NSMB - First 2D Mario in forever

NSMB 2 - I don't know what the fuck is going on, something about coins and real flight is back

NSMB U - HD (well backgrounds look great), finally get off of SMB3's nuts and has some SMW influence, full world map

Only thing that makes them feel like more of a rehash than 1-World is the lack of change in Mario's design and that god awful music (3D Lands was significantly better though).

I don't mind Mario rehashes too much. It's solid gameplay that I enjoy.

HOWEVER, I really wish they would mix up the style/atmosphere/theme a bit. All the 2D games have had very similar looks. How about mixing it up a bit like Sunshine or Galaxy where we had new themes to work with. Also, maybe a different story than Bowser kidnapping Peach. Anything to basically make the game more than just a new set of levels in the same themes and maybe one new power-up.

Anyhow, don't pretend like 100% of /v/ is the "core" audience. lol

The Mario game was an obvious way to start off the system. Because of Miiverse and achievements, there will be a new experience.
There isn't much of an excuse for the one on the 3DS.

I see a big difference between what they do with COD and what Nintendo does with Mario, though. The thing is, they won't be releasing anymore of the NSMB games. (I hope not) At least until a new console comes out. That could be 10 years from now. They aren't retarded enough to release anymore on Wii U or 3DS.

COD will get a new rehash extension EVERY year.

Back in the 90s we had expansion packs. Expansion packs were good - new content that didn't cost anywhere near the price of a new game. We liked quite a lot of them.
