Skull Kid originally stole the mask because he felt like he was an outcast. And what used to be harmless tricks and pranks, turned into robberies.
After skull kid got the mask, his ego was fed by the power the mask gave him, and he spiraled out of control.
This is a common occurrence in life where you have a regular kid that turns into an outcast or a loner through whatever means. The kid is taken in by power. He might hang out with a bad crowd, join a gang, someone gives him some money for illegal work, or hands him a gun. Whatever the case, the the power the kid is given goes to his head until he can't control his actions. And he becomes a puppet by whomever is enabling him.
In Skull Kid's case, his enabler was Majora's Mask. he's spiraling out of control, and needs help.
This is why Link is taught the song of healing. Because the consistent theme in the game is regret, loneliness, and depression. And it's Link's job to cure those things.
I could go on, but I can't explain the entire game in just a post. Or even a fee posts. but you have to pay more attention. There is actually depth to the story. Not just bullshit atmosphere.
