I was in the service for 3 years. The reason pretty much EVERYONE handles their weapon like that is because it's the 'lowered' stance, a passive position of holding the weapon were in the event of a discharge, the round is least likely to fly off and hit something unintentional.
You can't just hold it up pointing forward for hours on end. That makes zero sense. You can't John Wayne the damn thing by pointing at the sky; That's just silly and if you did manage to fire off something, there's no telling were or who it may land on.
Seriously, I want to hear your counter argument. No one is pointing it down directly at their feet. This shit aint rocket surgery.
