Yes, it backfired like all FUCK in Sword Art Online, but the way that particular system worked would be what would need to happen. You might not like the anime, or manga, but it did have things worked out a bit more than the.hack series, which just used a visor and a playstation controller.
Obviously, take out all the bugs, and the whole "you can't fucking logout and you die for real if you die in-game" thing, and maybe add in some extra security and the ability to forcefully take that thing off without brain damage, and you'd be good.
Still, shit like that would take a while to make.
