Niko Bellic, by definition, is a villain. He kills and steals for money, kidnaps a girl and knocks her out and by his actions gets either Roman or Kate killed.

So why do you sympathize with him?

Because he's honest. He admits he just straight fucks people's lives up, but he doesn't mean to do it, he's just trying to help himself and his family. It's the same reason that I killed Derrick McReary instead of Francis, at least Francis is honest. Derrick just pinned his troubles on everyone else, where as Francis admits that he wants these people killed for him only.

Because he tries.

He goes to Liberty City looking for a better life, to leave behind the shit he HAD to do as part of some war or another. Instead, he finds it's all a lie, and his cousin (who he obviously cares for) is tied up, beneath the boot of the 'bad guys'.

So he does more questionable shit to get his cousin out from under the control of the 'bad guys', and it just keeps snowballing, when all he wants is for him and his cousin to live a normal, straight life. To live the American Dream they were promised.

He tries. And that's why I sympathise with him.

If I'm honest, Grand Theft Auto IV is my favourite. San Andreas used to be, until I realised the other day I like IV a lot more since when I was playing San Andreas I kept comparing it to IV and realising what IV did a lot better. Just my opinion.

Actually, from what I can remember, Roman is a fucking idiot who pulls Niko into all this bad shit, and forces him to commit horrible crimes on other people. Niko was trying to start a new life, and the first fucking thing that happens? Turns out Roman is a fucking liar, who only tricked Niko over to the states so he could help him out with his own stupid ass problems he's gotten by being a shitstain and a gambler.

And of course, Niko is no angel himself. He's out for revenge. But he could've gotten it without dragging half of the town down with him.

I want a GTA protagonist that is a real sociopath, not this "when I thought I was out, they pull me back in" and "I do it because I have to" shit. I want to play as someone that is not older than late twenties, someone real reckless that pisses off people and by the end of the game, everyone either fears you or wants you dead.

Look at when they're on Happiness Island. Niko tells him he worked with the five families and they all think Peg's a joke. He says "Whatever," but you know that fucking gutted him. That was his dream, to be a big player like them. But they all thought of him as the annoying kid on the playground that they all laughed at behind his back. He died with his pride destroyed and his dreams crushed.

Nearly all of Niko's problems stem from his inablity to let go of grudges, his misplaced loyalty to people who give precisely 0 fucks about him or his life, and the fact that he takes the easy shorcut into organized crime, however noble his end-goals may be.

Those are CHARACTER FLAWS.

A Mary Sue or whatever is defined by having either no character flaws or "flaws" that are clearly designed simply to make the character more endearing or special.

Niko makes stupid decisions and gets into bed with the wrong people. He's punished for it by having somebody he cares about die.

I'd do that too, though I wouldn't go on rampages, I would just get in fistfights on the street and then maybe pull a gun and shoot them in the leg.

Rockstar / Dan Houser just can't fucking write. I really thought it was. They fudge the line a little with some of the side characters, like when you find the guy who sold out Niko's unit and he's just a wreck, that was pretty good. But every other character it's straight-up Rockstar formula; there're the cool guys like Roman and Jacob who'll never stop making excuses for the protag. There're the dumb-ass allies who think he's cool but don't understand his DEEP EMOTIONAL PAIN, like Brucie and Yusuf Amir. And there're the bad guys who are always ultra-hypocritical and smarmy. Same shit in every game.

You remember in GTAIV when he goes into the Russian dude's house and meets his wife, and tells her the story about how he and his old unit chopped up a load of children? And she's just fucking all like "Oh, don't you worry about your soul?" A guy she's never met before walks into her house and tells her he fucking massacred children, and she totally loves him for it. That's Rockstar writing.

Well, I don't disagree completely, but he didn't phrase it that way. The woman was probably a stupid bitch and didn't understand anything. It was also very clear it was something done in the war and she's from Russia or whatever, she's probably heard her share of shitty war atrocities through her upbringing.

Sure, but the point is that's every scene. Every interaction in every GTA game + RDR + Max Payne 3 is the same. There's only ever 2 sources of challenge to a Rockstar protag. One comes from bad guys, the challenge from whom is always rendered moot when they're inevitably shown to be hypocrites. Bullshit. Throughout the whole game, he references religious terms like God, heaven and such. He never seemed like an atheist.

He WAS implying he killed those children because Illena asked him about HIS soul. He just basically said that he himself was beyond redemption, so in a sense he no longer has a soul.

Because it was a better written ending than the Kate death one. None of the emotion in the ending makes sense for a character that at best was only passively interested in him. What more, Niko always wanted a way out, but never saw an opportunity to do so, the offer of money despite the bad blood with the mob gave him a window to set things right and end the pointless cycle of bloodshed. Little does he know is that people are even more petty than he thought possible.

What more, whether you think taking the money or revenge was the right choice, it makes no sense for Niko to make a decision based on the meta-game effect of who dies, since besides the fact its a video game there is no inherent cause and effect from what decision he makes to who ends up shot.

In a good story the characters aren't black and white, and characters with actual personalities tend to have redeaming qualities no matter how evil they are.

The fundamental understanding that they are human too, is what makes you sympathise with them, even if will kill them right afterwards.

I'd say you're about halfway in the story now. The Manny and Elizabeta missions are the slowest part of the game imo, but the Playboy X and Dwayne missions right after steps it up fast. Frances and the UL paper missions are great too, and they're right ahead of you.

you get the Buzzard chopper which is the GTA version of Little Bird chopper and it comes with two rocket pods (which was the fucking reason I bought the DLC). also you get new activities like basejumping and also can call a guy to make him bring you a car of your choice from a short list. it also adds a SWAT APC with a canon. it's somewhat easy to get it destroyed though so don't expect the durability of the tank in SA.

Near the end when you have the choice to kill or release the man who betrayed you and if you release him you are all hunky dory "revenge does not really make you feel better" and if you waste him you get "I HAVE KILLED HIM BUT NOW I AM EMPTY WHY AM I EMPTY!?"

I shot him anyway.

Why does media always do this? I am not condoning going out and murdering people who wrong you but getting revenge feels good. It feels like justice. Like you are putting things into balence. At worst it just doesn't feel like anything. But only when you have let it escalate so much that it consumes who you are and dictates your whole life. Nico may be guilty of this but even when you are completely obsessed so much that you only live to see another day because you want so badly for this moment of revenge, for one moment you are not empty. You are filled. Being empty follows because you have nothing to do your whole purpose in life is gone. But for that brief time you have done what you devoted your entire being to doing and it feels great. Your mind your body and your soul to one task and all others are secondary. It is almost like completing a great work of art. You are only empty because you have just poured your whole essence into a goal until you had nothing left to give. The fruit of your labors are right in front of you. Things are brought in a full circle. And you can finally start to heal.

the suits aren't bad at all, but i was looking more for the urbanized merc look for this part of the story in which i'm supposed to be all out of cash
that made me end up with the brown jacket, cargo pants and boots, basically the default look that's getting kinda boring but makes a good effect when i'm running in the condos, shotgunning bustas

I actually think it is a relatively accurate portrayal. Revenge sounds nice exactly because as you say, it is an attempt to return balance to your world by removing the part that distraught it.
But regardless of removing the guy, that doesn't really alter the past, sure you are glad that he's dead, but the fundamental change in your life that you were expecting doesn't come. The past is still the same, and balance remains distraught regardless of his removal.
I'd say that it is exactly the sort of unreasonable expectation that revenge will return everything to normal and then you can go on as if nothing happened, that leads to the feeling of emptiness when you realise that for all the trouble it essentially changed nothing.

I don't think anyone chooses revenge thinking it will change things. There might be that subconscious desire but rarely can somebody be so deluded. For me revenge will never be an eye for an eye. A just revenge requires eqivelent exchange but that isn't always the answer. Revenge is a personal desire and as such since it is already a selfish act. There isn't much point to it if you are deluded enough to think it will change things or don't actually feel your actions will bring you that sense of peace. Nico earned close to a million dollars, fine suits, cars, friends, his family and a budding relationship. There is no reason for him to feel empty. Empty revenge is giving up all these things to see another man suffer. Losing sight of what is, to fix what was. That is how you lose yourself.
