Alright.
After a good 6 months of absinence from Minecraft, I checked back today.
What the fuck, really? Nothing's changed. The levelling system is still pointless, the engine is still shit, lighting is still buggy, water physics are still retarded, Minecraft.net is still down every other day (like right now).

What is this fat jew doing with all his money?

Being a sandbox, Minecraft kind of expects you to make your own fun with the tools available. It's not for everyone.

Personally, I play it every day and still enjoy it.

Notch hasn't worked on the game in almost a year. Jeb, Jonkagstrom, and Dinnerbone are the developers now.
You can use XP to enchant items, repair them, and combine enchantments.

It doesn't help that

A) Most players don't want any content that gets in the way of their buildings or otherwise damages their constructions. So forget about fortress sieges or anything of the like.

B) Mojang is insistent on making all new content either super-ultra rare, or something that you can only delve into once you've spent a cuntton of time in the game.

besides tekkit/technic are there any good mod packs? I tried to do it myself a few times but everytime I get problems where 1 or 2 of the mods dont like forge for some reason. I tried using the minions mod with better than wolves but for some reason the BTW's creator has a stick up his ass about forge so he wont make it work and I really want to try something new besides the whole buildcraft/ee2/thaumcraft thing.

Notch basically took tons of cool ideas, put them into the game, but then got lazy and didn't bother to fully implement them. Boats still suck, AI is crap, enchantments/leveling isn't even worth it, hunger is lame...

If the majority of people WANT to build shit rather than have fortress sieges, why the fuck would they implement them for a few people who would rather something more action based? Its a sandbox game, not geared for pvp, not geared for action.

In saying that, the lack of bug fixes, especially with lighting is really getting annoying. Since Notch quit working on it and Jeb/Dinnerbone started they have pretty much admitted that the minecraft engine is shit, and a lot of the bugs cant be fixed.

Im one of the people you guys dislike - I like the building and creativity but rarely play survival. On that side of things, they have added quite a bit of new things for building. But survival/adventure still seems really un-balanced, Especially with the introduction anvil and the boss that you "craft" since they cant be bothered making a place for it.

Check out the Olddays mod. You can enable stuff like those old alpha bugs such as water elevators, or you can disable dumb shit like hunger. You can also alter things like the dimension of your tools and how mobs function.

It also comes with Nxblite for choosing what kind of world you want. There's also true ssp mode instead of the game just opening a lan server.

Well, the thing about that hexagram is it's an idea I have for a nutrition game mechanic. Meat + bread would be like eating both items. A bridge item. So yeah, those types of things.

while they had that bit of code on the clipboard, why didnt they also make sandstone and grey stone walls? or versions for mossy cobblestone etc.

Though each food group would have advantages and disadvantages. Favoring one kind of food over the others would penalize you probably more than not. You'd want to keep it balanced, for steadier, quicker health regen and to keep negative effects at bay.

the actual survival features are a joke, hunger changed food from a health potion into a regenerating health potion, and whens the last time anyone ran out of food. i dont even eat the wheat i harvest, i turn it all into prime steak and i have mountains of steak piling up in my chests.

hunger might have been a good addition if food wasnt so plentiful, or if they had also implemented rotting, but as it stands it just activates god mode, permenant regenerating health all the day bro.

no, survival games should always end in death, and the gameplay is about how long you survive for, and im pretty sure if i was to ask most people "whats the longest youve survived for in minecraft", the answer would invariably be "err.... indefinitely?"

I like Minecraft when it was just into Beta. It felt like a game of endless possibilities because of the huge world and lack of resources or help. You placed in an unknown world and told to defend yourself.

Making huge houses felt like an accomplishment because you found the minerals, what they do and maybe even found a recipe without a guide. Now there's achievements, hunger, spells, and a bunch of other bullshit.

It would be nice to have some other stone to build than bricks, cobblestone and normal stone. And walls made of wool aren't everyone's thing.

For instance, they could add marble and have it be used for some other shit.
Like crafting statues, here's how it works:
You build a mason-stand (basically a slab-like thing.
Then you need to put a certain number of blocks into or onto it and then you can enter the mason-stand by clicking it with a hammer/pick tool. 1 block can be turned into chickens, two blocks can be used for pigs, sheep, wolves, humans maybe even squids and so on, three blocks for cows, something like that.
When you want to place them, you need marbel slabs to place them on and then you place them kind of like signs right on top of the marble stand. You can also add a metal-plate that reads a text just like a sign would.

And of course, you could use it to build better-looking palaces when using the block, for instance.

The inherent problem with water physics, is, if they worked like in real life, and assuming that the ocean source blocks = infinite water (since the oceans obviously would never be allowed to drain completely out of a hole in the bedrock), any time the seafloor met a tunnel everything below that point would be filled with water. Basically it would add a completely unwanted mechanic known as "the water table." Because of wonky cave generation, this would be a massive problem for anyone going underground. Even far far inland, you could still encounter sea water occupying massive swaths of underground real estate.

If the chunk is not loaded in memory, obviously there is nothing going on near that source of water that would cause its flow to change. Once the flow is calculated, the water will inevitably settle to a finished state, it doesn't need to perform constant calculations.

Maybe you guys just don't build underwater enough like I do, but those bubbles can appear from when a chunk generates and sand moves around due to underground cavern generation. I'd say the reason is because the game is horribly programed. One would think that they would have devised a way to easily incorporate new content on the fly but sadly they don't.

Everyone who works at Mojang is terribly lazy. They don't want to fix the issues because "it takes too much work".

I don't think it would be difficult to create a plugin/addon system similar to that of Garrysmod or other existing "sandbox" games.

Someone mentioned it earlier in the thread, but I'm really really getting sick of all the shit they're adding that requires you play the game for five months before finding and building.

Ive been playing this game for years, and it's only barely liveable with friends, and even then only in short bursts. Every time I see a NEW FEATURE, I update and excitedly hop into my game, and quickly become bored and depressed and frustrated because said feature requires I work for half of my lifetime and sacrifice my entire social network.

Then, these SUPER MEGA ULTRA things just help you do what you already have been doing (have been required to do to obtain the ULTRA items) to begin with, so by the time you finally obtain materials to build anvils and experience for items and the new aura block that gives bonuses in a radius, you wont need any of it.

And potions are shit useless. I've never brewed them outside of PVP, and even then a good fire aspect II sword can win a fight on it's own. I suppose health potions and fire resist and all that might be useful in hardcore, but obtaining said potions requires that you already have diamond, an established base and materials, so it'd just be overkill anyways.

I'll just continue ranting, no one has to read this.

And if the things they add are TOO strong, you feel like you have to ignore the entire game to get it. I see this when I'm playing with friends. I'm trying to get a farm going and a decent mine, and they're focused on diamonds and finding the end for boss fights, so much so that they neglect everything else we need and we have a miserable time. Nothing that is being added really compliments the game.

I mean, exploration? What? Adventure? Sure it's neat to explore, but the idea of this game is to settle down and build something, or build something huge, if you make it feel like you're building a prison because it'll be that much harder to explore the new features far from your home, people wont want to build and the game becomes even less rewarding.

AI sucks, default textures suck, the game itself kinda sucks.

The only time I have fun with it anymore is when I go into multiplayer. I remember I played on a pirate server with some folks from 4chan and it was incredible, we built fortresses and dungeons that were explorable with traps, we faught and have PVP arenas, we had large wars (without any plugins), giant structures, and just fun in general. Sadly Mojang doesnt want to impliment anything into the game that rewards this.

Not only will they not support multiplayer play, but they've hardly implimented anything to help the occasional single player. Singleplayer minecraft is the emptiest experience a human being can have at this point

That's Jeb. He took over development when the game was in a state so horribly coded, that even high-end computers have heat-stroke trying to render it. He was like "oh yeah, I'll bang out an API" and then he realized, very slowly over the course of 8 months, that that was just too fucking pie-in-the-sky.

Modding API basically means the whole game has to be re-written.

Something's up. There's got to be a breaking point.

This is perhaps the most annoying part of it. Everything they're adding needs a fuckton of resources to do for little benefit.

Want to make potions? You need to go to the nether first. Which means you need Obsidion. Which means you need a Diamond Pick. Then you need to get blaze rods and collect ingredients.

Want to repair? You need a fuck ton of iron before you can even make one.

Want a beacon? You need to first take down the Wither, then you need a crapload of gold diamond or emerald blocks to use it for its relatively short range.

Pretty much anything that actually does something needs ridiculous amount of time and resource gathering to get and usually what you get for it doesn't make it worth it.

Weapons are repairable in the craftin bench sans enchantments, theres hardly anything worth using enchantments against, and having full hunger restores your health as well so health potions aren't too useful. And it'd take longer to get the resources to make any potion than it would be to just do whatever you need to do. Not to mention creative mode if you just want to build and the AOE effect from the beacon isn't worth all the materials for it either.

Yeah, I think they've dropped development for the most part. The community is still active and it's open source, so you might be able to find some much better versions on the forum. Theres a lot of mods that tweak things here and there to add more polish. Honestly though, what does Minecraft have that makes it more polished? A few extra biomes and enchanting? Minecraft has no polish and it hasn't looked or performed any better since late Alpha.

The development had already gone to shit by that point. Alpha, on the other hand, was the shit, with seeecret friday updates every week, new content being added at a rate that misled everyone into thinking the game would become rich with content, progression, secrets, and exploration.

I'm not saying it's amazing by any means. I just saw a bunch of people bitching about JAVA and thought I'd throw this into the midst.
You can download soundpacks and whatnot. You can have it running almost exactly like Minecraft within 30 minutes. They just try to keep each release as minimal as possible instead focusing on the engine (which isn't that amazing, honestly).

The biggest perks is that it's free, pretty good modding community, and the server setup is so much easier and stable than minecraft and doesn't require bukkit or anything like that to run mods.

It's not a minecraft killer by any means, just a cool side project to play with some buds every now and again.
Yeah it runs like shit but it's still much better than Minecraft natively

One weird thing guys. I get a HUGE memory leak only about 5 mins in the game. I never used to have this problem. Basically the entire game goes into a slideshow and the level renderer (from the F3 menu) is shown taking all the memory. Any ideas?

I dunno, I feel like the game is actually making some progress with Jeb and Dinnerbone in charge even though it feels very slow. Dinnerbone especially has some very practical ideas for the game like the flowerpot and item frames.

The main problem I think with the game is that development is still too random. They go off on these boring old tangents like villages, enchanting, potion making, The End, beacons, when NONE of that stuff really matters in the gameplay until very late in the game if it matters at all.

Finish the basic gameplay first. Create all the ores, animals, biomes, environmental details, tools, and weapons BEFORE starting on other stuff. Make basic potions and enchantments available earlier in the game. Consolidate things. Having more items is fine, but not when it's sole purpose is to be used in crafting one more thing.

But on the same vein, the core gameplay hasn't really changed any. Combat is still boring, consisting only of what? Two weapon types? Enchanting adds some flavor to it, but not much.

Mobs are really bland and the same everywhere. With only the exception of now Witches and the Nether somewhat.

Movement is still rather dull. I'm still waiting for more halfblocks, especially dirt half blocks so you don't have to jump over every fucking block while exploring.

Theres so many early game tweaks they need to fix. Like said, Potions and Enchantments are available so late that it really doesn't matter. By the time you got to the Nether, you pretty much have everything you need for the rest of the game.

After months on my current world, I still need another ender eye to open up the portal. And another two more to get an ender chest. Endermen are shy as fuck and run away when you try to hit them (it's a bit easier when you have dogs), and then the eye isn't even a guaranteed drop. I get at least ten creepers for every enderman. (And then there's how they made creepers blow up faster to make redditfags happy)

I've also found exactly one NPC village, and zombies ate them all months ago, so now it's a ghost town.
