Also why isn't RDR getting more shit for using health regeneration? That game was easy as fuck.

I think gta could do with regenerative health, just not "10 seconds behind cover to let the blood fall off your eyes" regenerative health.
If it slowly refilled over time while you're not in a mission (about an in-game day to fully regen) that would be great, and then if you wanted to do a mission and you were still at low health you could grab some food.
Too bad rockstar aren't going to do that

I didn't play RDR but i did play GTA4 and it was exactly as i said.
Cover system are made for controllers, because peasants have hard time moving and shooting at the same time, that's the only reason it is there, it doesn't add anything to the gameplay.

The hardcore mode nerfed it and removed passive regen on the deadeye making the game a bit harder.

Also it was a fun game therefore things like that can be forgiven. Unlike Jack's voice riding a fucking horse which can't be excused under any circumstance.

It completely changes the gameplay. It has nothing to do with realism.

In games that don't have regen, when your health gets low, you need to be careful in order to survive the gunfight. It usually requires some skill.

With regen, all you have to do is get to cover and wait. It barely requires any skill at all. Getting shot at is just a minor inconvenience that you have to get out of your way, never any real danger.

Honestly, GTAIV could use health regen. The amount of time I spent looking for a fucking hotdog stand only to be hit by some prick while I'm trying to cross the road. Well, what I'd rather have is a system which gives you full health at the beginning of a mission and lets you bulk buy armour.

But there is no fun because you have to sit behind walls to not die right away, but at the same time it's really uninvolving because there's no consequence for being shot, you just hide for three seconds to get your health back. I thought GTA4 had two really good missions. One you were in some ruins or something, you had to fight through some cops and escape, and the bank robbery. Both felt really good, like a real action game. Everything else was just so boring. The bank robbery felt amazing, like Heat.

That's where you are wrong OP, GTA IV did a cover system right. If anything made the game easy, it was the HUD and the mini map displaying enemies locations. Also, these games don't have difficulty levels, because if you shoot someone i the head, well they die, automatically, like how it should be for a game like this. This isn't an RPG.

I will admit the regenerating health wasn't the best thing for RDR but it certainly did not hurt it or make it easy to point of not being fun. That is why no one bothers to bitch about it, because it's an incredibly well made game that deserves the praise it gets.

Also, these games did not force you to use cover in any way. If you want to go run and gun, be my fucking guest. But there's no difference in you awkwardly standing behind a corner or crouch behind a garbage can, and having a snap-to cover system just to make that process easier and not look weird as fuck.

Health Regen has it's place in certain games. The problem is that just about every shooter has it where it does not belong.

Take Battlefield 3 for instance, it has health regen and it has a medic class. These two things should never be in the same game. The medic's only saving grace is that they can revive dead teammates. Other than that the medic is trivialized by a game mechanic.

Not that guy, but I like traditional health pack systems because you need to be wary when it comes to every single encounter. You aren't on equal ground and you can't hang out in one area constantly. You're going to need to get from point A to point B and that medpack is your reward. You can chip away at people's health and that's a valid tactic.

With health regen you aren't rewarded for an exceptional encounter where you aren't struck. You also are only ever WORSE off for knocking 99% of their health off as they'll get that back but you're out ammo.

Because it's console exclusive. Console players need regen health to counter the bad aim and movement of a controller.

RDR probably opted with regen health because lack of food and food vendors. In return you could also buy health restoring items and hold them on you, and multiple ones, where as GTA only gives you the option of wearing a vest.

It only devolves into whack-a-mole if it's done poorly and the game *lets* you do that. A well designed system lets you use cover strategically as simply an additional option to approach a situation with as opposed to being the single core combat mechanic.

3) what about the wack-a-mole shit? in cover shooters the only thing you do is sit in cover waiting for the enemy to show the head and shoot, it doesn't require any skill, you just sit there and wait, yes sure sometimes they add some gimmick, but either way you will 90% of the time do that.
But hey i'm sure you can explain all the wonders that cover system add to gaming.

Basically. It's my go to blow-off-steam and just want to relax game where I don't need to think really. If you want to make it a little more challenging, and trust me, they help

-No Auto aim(should not have been doing this anyways)
-No mini map/Blip only

Forces you to choose your own routes, and eve take advantage of the GPS in high end cars that gives you turn by turn directions.

Now if only I could turn off the reticule as well. Wish I had a PC for this kind of shit, I hear they have mods that are build around this.

This is not the case in GTA IV and RDR though. You can't get shot many times in IV before your health reaches zero, but in RDR (on normal) you can easily take 20-30 bullets at reasonable intervals and not die.

That just confines you to sitting behind a wall, without adding any excitement because you always get back to full health in seconds. A health bar gives you some freedom of movement but still requires care because you have to manage your health. Regen health as seen in RDR removes both freedom and consequence.

Honestly I didn't like the regen health at all, but the game has so many things to do, and the horseback shooting is so deliciously complex but functional I decided to ignore it. The GOTY version of RDR also makes the game twice as hard by making looting harder and rarer, items more expensive you also don't have unlimited horse works anymore either. In games that have regen, when your health gets low, you need to be careful in order to survive the gunfight. It usually requires some skill.

Without regen, all you have to do is find a health boost. It barely requires any skill at all. Getting shot at is just a minor inconvenience that you have to get out of your way, never any real danger.

Just kidding. Fact is neither requires skill. Just remember the health pickup locations or find a secluded spot for a few seconds.

What a faggot. Regenerating health has it's purpose. It fuels the action paced gameplay. Without it, players take less risks and are often times pidgeonholed into camping like faggots.

As long as there isn't COD-like health regen I'm ok. If there's segmented health regen (with something like 5 segments) that's fine with me, but if there's any health regen it should be slow, and preferably it should be an action you take like bandaging yourself.

Also about the bloody screen you get in COD when you take damage, I really liked the R6: vegas way of having your screen heavily blurred when taking damage. But maybe that's just me. Also you'd start seeing black when near death (although in that game you were always near death).

It doesn't. If you're constantly in and out of action, you're getting the most use out of health regen. If you're waiting in a corner, you don't. If there's no health regen, getting into fights constantly means you lose health that you're not going to get back easily, and the camper who still has full health will have a double advantage to you (camping near the healthpack of course).

I hope this was due to console limitations, you know, not being able to render the detailed city that fast etc. But it probably wasn't. Anyway, I love cover system because it adds to immersion, look at RDR when you ducking behind the barrel, jack shrugs every time bullet hit his cover, can do jump over and slides from cover to cover, you to play the game like a western and not quake.
Same in GTA 4.

Beside its the only way to play those two games because rockstar fucked up controls, both games have very large spaces around the centre on joypad in which game doesnt react to your commands.
Just look at yt vids people just jerking their aim around the screen.

And people: The cover systems are bad when they shit up the level design. Look at Mass Effect for instance. There's no real reason to hate the cover system, it's the consequences that follow most of the time.

And for the regenerating health: Of course it fucking sucks having regenerating health IN A COMPETETIVE MULTIPLAYER GAME. Again, there's no reason believing that it had any impact on a singleplayer game.
