Ok /v/, now I get the whole underlying message of the Metal Gear Solid games is to pass something on.

MGS: Passing of gene's
MGS2: Passing of meme's
MGS3: Passing of legend, status, title (boss to big boss)
MGS4: ???

I can't for the life of me figure out what is passed on in MGS4. Maybe information and control using nanomachines but's it's no where near as clear as the other 3. Anyone care to help out or even come up with their own theories?

Also any MGS discussion is fine, positive or negative.

I wouldn't bother, OP.

MGS4 is a terrible game that does a massive disservice to the MGS story and characters. It was an insult to fans, and Kojima knew that.

Gameplay? What's that? No, I think you'd prefer to watch more cut scenes.

You'd think Kojima would have put that shit behind him after MGS2, but nah, he chose to spit in the face of long-time fans. He's a thief, a liar, and in all honestly, a fucking criminal. He shouldn't be allowed near the director's chair for any future video game, ever.

Want to know what'll happen with the next generation consoles? More cut scenes. Kojima won't be able to help himself. And the worst thing? No one will stop him. He's surrounded by fucking yes-men, as if we didn't know that already, given what he was allowed to do to the MGS story.

He's a hack. A talentless, filthy westaboo hack. I hate him, I hate his games, and I hate how his influence has spread to other development houses.

Stay away from any video game with Hideo Kojima's name on it.

Well a definition of a meme is the passing of an idea or culture or behavior from one person to another without the use of genetics. MGS2 was about passing on your legacy and also how the patriots wanted to control what information get's passed on to other people in the digital age.

Not OP, but the mgs2 focused on information control. While you get many traits through DNA, that doesn't ensure that the culture/values/ideology (memes) is passed down. Snake tried to pass down his values to future generations since he couldn't pass his genes. Raiden learned in the end that even though he was a killer he could pass on proper values/memes to future generations by teaching right and wrong, it wasn't tied through genes.

MGS4 kinda didn't have a reoccurring theme. It was just closure. Solid Snake completely changed characters going from passing memes to not giving a damn. While I kinda get why Kojima did the things he did with the characters I still didn't like it.

I found this theme touching being a long time MGS fan, but I agree that 4 was questionable compared to the others.

MGS: Biology is not destiny (this may seem like a retarded message by western standards since that's something feminists started saying in the...60s probably? But think about the Japanese audience. Another few things I like discussing is the several thousand different theories of MGS2

My interpretation is that TS is what Otacon tells everyone when asked about Shadow Moses. He idolizes Snake, which is why Snake is such an over the top action hero in TS.

The VR missions in Ghost Babel were what Raiden trained on. Hell, the name of the guy doing the VR in that game is Jack, the narrator throughout them can do all the things Arsenal Gear can do (fake voices, know what you're thinking, etc.), and MGS2 directly references the VR missions from that game when Arsenal Gear goes insane.

MGS4 is about how you can't pass on everything, some things will just get lost in the translation, and people will misinterpret and obsess over what you've passed on to them, fucking it up. The whole plot of the series is about how BB, Zero, and the Patriots misinterpreted the Boss's vision and ideals, and fucked over the world in the process.

MGS4 is about an aging/oldschool soldier taking on armies raised in VR simulators and controlled by nanomachines. And winning.

If you look at any level of the game, they sneak in old stuff, and new stuff. Even Raiden. He's an old character in a new body. Other things like the MGS3 cast turning out to be the Patriots, and the high tech soldiers killing all the middle eastern gorilla soldiers with AKs and cheap gear.

Then there's the Shadow Mosus revisit with all robotic enemies. It's an old area filled with brand new super high tech enemies.

It's literally "old vs new" the videogame.

It's all about Snake's real experiences vs the fake experiences of the younger soldiers and all that shit. He wins because they never really did anything. They're all literally disposable toy soldiers that were mass produced in the new method.

Snake won because he was forged in the fires of hell (so to speak) and earned his skills, rather than having them programmed into him.

Much like MGS2, MGS4 is a metaphor for videogames on a certian level, but it's mostly the "oldVSnew" thing.

Alright here's the thing.

Was a fun game. Dealt with the passing on of genes.

>MGS2
The story was about the passing on of memes, that we can't react to new situations with cultural memories. Meaning that every generation must form their own identity, not relying on history's solutions to problems that seem structurally similar to our modern problem.

Raiden starts the game attempting to be like Snake, but fails constantly because he's not. The patriots used Solid Snake's Shadow Moses actions to train Raiden, thinking it would make him like Snake except it didn't. Big Shell, whilst a similar problem was not Shadow Moses and therefore applying the 'Solid Snake Solution' wouldn't work. Because of this Raiden constantly fails. It's only at the end when Raiden gets a sword and recognizes his child-soldier history (where he had an affinity for swords) that he beats Solidus.

This is also part of the gameplay, where everything mirrors MGS1 but actively goes against gratifying the player for trying to be like Snake, reflecting Raiden's actions in the story with the player playing the game.

NOW THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE END OF THE SERIES.
Kojima was done, because he had planned MGS2 to essentially destroy the concept of the sequel and leave all the story elements that weren't wrapped up ambiguous because, you know, we don't need to know everything about everyone in every piece of media ever.

But it sold well, and Konami went MORE.

People just say it's VR because of the whole Rose and Colonel thing. The main question for it all would be ,"why?". Who would build such a VR, why would they put someone through it, and what purpose would it even serve.

Rose is easily explained. The patriots got her to get close to Jack and all the stuff. Then for the mission they just didn't use the real Rose but an AI one. The more things they could control and manipulate during Planter, the better. The whole game was about controlling information.

Metal Gear Solid 4 was a projection of Kojima.
What I saw of it was an end. It's message that not everything needs to be passed on, some things need to be laid to rest. Kojima's getting old. He can't make games forever. He's getting cynical too. Which is what I saw in the change of Snake, as he;d been so energetic in previous games.

Right around the time you fight him somebody, I don't remember who, explains that the Genome of humans is actually longer than it is said to be , but the information can be controlled and no one will know.
There's a reason that info is in there.

Was Kojima delivering an enjoyable story without answering fans questions. They wanted to know who the patriots were and what it was all bout. He didn't want to answer these questions because he knew he couldn't and never planned to.
So he went out of his way to..... not. By making a prequel he could expand on the universe without having to do anything about MGS2.

So with MGS3, Kojima set about making a game that had it's own unique identity, just as he had said should have happened in MGS2 and it became the most popular game. He laughed and went oh yeah see you guys get it now.

But nope. They still wanted to know what was up with MGS2.

Yah, they weren't. Because it was never supposed to happen and he wanted people to understand that. But instead they bitched about how nanomachines were the magic wrap up for everything, even though that was the reason he put it in there.

To remind you that knowing everything isn't the best after all. It's not going to make you happy because it'll never be as good as you imagined.

Why do people hate MGS4? It's absolutely necessary for the completion of the story. MGS2 just totally ended without anything regarding the Patriots or Ocelot being resolved.

It was to train him to become a Solid Snake that the Patriots could control. It didn't work though, as training him on simulations and testing him on Big Shell is exactly the point of the game.

I hate how you never really meet the bosses in 4 (except Ocelot of course). You don't talk to them first, don't get to know them. They look cool but they're just there with no real characterization. All you get is Drebin's backstory afterwards (somehow he knows every tiny detail).

In MGS3 you had Boss becoming big boss, Big boss and her double agent thing. Snake/Boss doing his thing.

In mgs4 it is just snake being old and warping up plot holes. Badly.

Each MGS games represents the different stages of life and their meaning

MGS is Snake becoming more than just a clone, an actual person, being "Born"

MGS2 is Raiden trying to follow in his male role models place, Snake, and eventually learns that he can follow his own path into adulthood

MGS3 is Big Boss letting go of the person he considers his mother figure, except this leads into a more literal interpretation because he has children, the clones, and becoming a leader and father to them

MGS4 is Snake growing old, and eventually putting everything from his past behind him, and ultimately accepting death for the next generation to take over

It's arguable that you can train bees and wasps
Some people can contort themselves pretty crazily.
Very very rarely people can age to be incredibly old, and its also arguable that they can still be active depending on what condition the body is in.
Using fire for propulsion isn't that hard to explain.
Fuck the sorrow though, I guess ghosts are real in the MGS universe.
Also volgin im sure couldve just had some weird shit happen to him in the past.

The last missile she deflects was just pure luck. Quite literally a 1 in a trillion chance of happening, she wasn't in control of it at all, just got lucky.

MGS2 is an exercise in not treading old ground. That's what the story is about and that's the way the game is designed. It evokes frustration from the player because it's not like MGS1, just like how Raiden can't respond to Big Shell like Snake did in Shadow Moses.

Kojima didn't just want to tell you, he wanted you to experience it as a player. So he created an unfulfilling explanation so you would feel unsatisfied as a player. They had to appear in universe because he wanted you to be legitimately frustrated.

Do you think in MGS2 they showed pre-release footage of Snake playable in Big Shell for shits and giggles? It was to play the player, so they'd form an unrealistic expectation fo the sequel and in that way become frustrated.

The even explain though that simulations can only get you so far, and it's not the same as real combat experience. There's no reason for them to make a VR so elaborate like the Big Shell. Plus it had to be real for them to be able to test S3 and manipulating real people, not just AIs they made themselves.

This, There where amazing moments in the game but at times the cluster fuck of a story was just insane.

I would have enjoyed if they went deeper into the whole VR warrior thing when they where talking to big momma. That is one of my personal favorite scenes from that game.

I really wish it had a focus and not just a goal. Like add something about the Pmc's fighting this fake war, about how they are made. Don't just glance over and with a tap x to see Caw of duty screen.

Show the older generation watching the younger generation killing each other over nothing but something old men had created.

Show them inheriting the world as it should be. It would all work into the central theme of ending the patriots while giving me an interesting story.

I didn't time it. Others did and it's a fact that MGS4 had 9.1 hours of cutscenes which is kinda crazy since the game is like what 15 hours long? The way it handled things was infinitely inferior compared to its predecessors script wise. How it handles returning characters like Meryl, Mei Ling and Naomi and Vamp for instance is clear proof of this. The lack of development for Zero also makes the final reveal with the Patriots ring hollow especially considering the series goes through great lengths to try and provide fleshed out villains that people can sympthaize with.

Then they just set everything up, Big shell Representing shadow moses with whacky bad guys, Gray Fox. and all that fun shit.

Solidus throw a monkey wrench in that plan when he came there, But the patriots made Raiden kill him.

Absolutely. But it didn't work. The point of the game was that even though the situation was similar the solution was not just do Snake in Shadow Moses all over again. It wouldn't work. That's the whole cultural memories thing they had at the end. Raiden had to step out from Snake's shadow in order to actually 'succeed'.

speaking of MGS4, when snake put the gun in his mouth, why would he do that instead of point blank to the forehead? I see this all the time in movies ect. wouldn't you just blow out the back of your neck/lower head and bleed to death? shot to the brain would be a lot more efficient.

I feel as though the game was saying that Raiden's game was a more swordfighting action game. Kind of like Revengance. I feel like all the stuff with the cyborg ninja was leading up to that. Raiden as C Ninja kills Ocelot.

Raiden's journey mirrors Snake's in MGS1 without giving sense of victory.

Raiden vs Fatman = Snake vs Raven. But if Raven gave Snake encouragement when he died, Fatman gave Raiden big pile of fuck you.

Raiden vs Vamp = Snake vs Wolf. But if Snake finishes her properly, Raiden always fail to kill Vamp.

It frustrates players and seems to be bad design. But form-wise it's to reinforce the fact that when Jack denies his own identity and try to replicate Snake, he'll always fail.

When he embrace his own identity, shed the gun for the sword, he emerge victorious by slaying Solidus.

Raiden vs Solidus in harrier jet = Snake vs Liquid in chopper. But if Snake shot the chopper down, Solidus managed to escape unharmed with the help of RAY and Vamp.

Raiden vs Fortune = Snake vs Fox. When Snake was unable to attack Fox with guns, he did it with physical attack. Meanwhile Raiden can't even approach Fortune and only saved by cutscene.

Raiden is denied victory because he's running away from his true Self and try too much to be someone he is not.

That was the point. He modernized the gameplay and strung together setpieces cause he was mad that nobody got MGS2. The response he got from 2 was that people didn't care about complex narrative, they just wanted to play like the badass solid snaek.

Well yeah. The player isn't supposed to be able to feel like they're doing redeeming actions for Snake's failure in the Tanker Chapter.

I mean, Snake was able to (canonically) save Meryl AND Otacon, and Raiden couldn't save Emma or the President.

Well, no. MGS2 was all about a generation (game) having its own unique identity. It's fitting that the most out of place MGS game in terms of the chronological storyline is one of the best since changed up the formula so much.

MGS3 was him proving that creating a sequel that doesn't retread old ground is the best course of action. It's still the most popular one to this day.

Who here believes that MGS2 was supposed to elicit frustration in the player to back up the points that the story was making? If not can you please give a calm argument as to why not?

Eh, depends on what you mean.

If you mean "frustration" at being forced to play as Raiden or the twist ending, then yeah that was completely intentional.

Rose's endless bullshit and Fatman's bomb searching side quest were just plain annoying, though.

The games make it a point to say how being a soldier goes beyond just following orders for whoever happens to be your commanding officer at the time.

Big Boss, Boss, Solid, Liquid, they all fought for a belief in their ideals, and that's what made them real soldiers. The PMCs and rebels in 4, and Raiden for the majority of 2 were just following orders and fall under your definition of 'soldier', but they were just weak pawns to a completely emotionless, apathetic proxy war.

The Boss was willing to become a villain for what she believed in. So was The Big Boss, and Liquid. They all fought against the Patriots, against battlefield control, against the destruction of actual soldiers.

Big Boss was as much of a hero as Snake, even if he was a warmongering dictator.

I get that it's more than just following orders, but even if Big Boss had ideals he wouldn't lay down his life for them like The Boss, Solid Snake, and Liquid even. He showed he wouldn't follow in The Boss' footsteps by sacrificing himself.

Disagree. What I take from the story is that following orders make you just a pawn (Raiden), but to be a true soldier is to follow order and also to put everything you have to believe in the cause.

Raven, Sniper Wolf, Fortune, Olga, Gray Fox, Liquidus, Revolver Ocelot; they're all soldiers who believe in something and they all die like soldiers (except Liquidus, poor sob). They might be villain which harms the world with their action, but they have that quality worth admiring.

It's to give your all and accept the role that you've been given.
