All droning aside, did nintendo make a mistake with the Wii U?

Its hardware is extremely bad especially compared to the ps4 and this is obvious now. They also don't have the same casual selling gimmick that the Wii had (motion controls)

Is the Wii-U the next Gamecube? It's really not looking good for nintendo now.

Yes. They should've spent the money developing better hardware and selling the tablet as a PC usable accessory. I would've bought one to be a chatpad/controller for PC games.

Nintendo made two mistakes with the WiiU:
1. They should have had a big name system seller game at launch. NSMBU would have been more exciting if NSMB2 hadnt just been released.
2. They didn't advertise that this was a new system specifically. They assumed people dont visit their website or read about video games would just know.

Comparatively weak hardware has never been a reason for a console to do bad as demonstrated by the 3DS, DS, Wii, PS2, and the fact that the N64 used cartridges instead of discs.

The mistake they made, was naming it the WiiU. Most casual fans think it's a add on to the wii. And most of the casual fans that own a Wii, feel like they wasted money on it since they never play it. Nintendo really should have dropped that damn name, and called it something else.

Possibly, but you can't tell with Nintendo until they have released a few of their big franchises. Wait until the new Zelda, Mario, and Mario Kart are released.

Metroid games were good, but that series is not a system seller.

This is also why Nintendo will never really "lose" the console race. They have rock solid first party devs with a very dedicated fanbase, so they're always going to have some successful exclusives regardless of third party devs (See: Gamecube)

Quality over quantity will prove true in the next gen. The PS4 may have all these high tech powers and all, but the games may be too expensive/boring.

The Wii U may have lesser graphics, but the gaming off-screen feature, as well as all the fun and cheap games and incentives just may win folks over to Nintendo this gen. High graphics ain't something everyone wants. You always hear people saying "gameplay >> graphics".

PS4 cannot be another PS2. PS1 and PS2 banked as hard as they did because they provided cheap innovative home entertainment options. The PS4 is MARKETING itself as precisely that, but we are in an era where the poorest of poorfags have netflix or ondemand. The PS4 has literally nothing on offer that will fill the role of its predecessors' cd/dvd. Hell, the fact that PS3 did only mediocre attests to the fact that adopting new technology isn't as important as it used to be - people don't care about blu-ray as much as they did dvds.

Idort who will probably buy the PS4 here, I love my WiiU. I like what it can currently do and all the potential it has and all the games Nintendo has recently announced. Hell, I put the console in the center of my house and now I can portably play WiiU games in my bedroom or my living room and that is awesome.

So far, i doubt Sony has made a mistake with the PS4. The PS4 appears to be just what the people wanted out of Sony, a game machine, the whole sharing bullshit is mostly irrelevant, casuals will eat that up and "hardcore" gamers will ignore it. The PS4's fate will be decided by it's price most likely.

And i doubt Microsoft is going to make a mistake. It's probably going to be some horrible Kineckt box on par with the PS4 in terms of power, because Microsoft is composed of evil geniuses, i'm sure the marketing will make it sell like hot cakes.

My suspicion is that it's more the extra cost involved with buying a machine capable of gaming slash ignorance of the specifics related to that machine. Smart computer buying takes work that console buying doesn't. Eliminate that aspect and you'll see an influx of gamers to the pc market (if that's your only goal, I'm not sure you want them in the first place).

I'm sure you will notice a drastic difference. You'll be able to do and see things on the PS4 that you couldn't do and see on the PS3. Same instance when comparing the Xbox 1 to the Xbox 360. You wouldn't be able to add hundreds of hundreds of zombies on the screen for the Xbox 1 for games like Dead Rising because it just wasn't powerful enough, compared to the 360.

This is true. The improving of graphics in regards to polygons has become much less noticable each generation.

Theres also the fact that because PS4 and 720 will like support the same screen resolutions as PS3/360, there pretty much won't be much of a noticable difference in regards to aesthetic quality in games in regards to artstyles and textures.

How would a handheld have 3D as an option without it being a focused gimmick? Some sort of peripheral that comes with the game? Or maybe if it was just really cheap I suppose? The 3D I head works really well in games like Mario 3D Land. Some of the puzzles utilize it pretty well.

Kid Icarus also looks really good in 3D as well.

At this point though the 3D is used more to add to the game experience, rather then being shoved in your face.

The main advertising blitz before it came out sure as fuck wasn't for titles such as SF4/Ape Escape/That shitty flying game it was all focused on the 3D and the 3D only it was the main focus for their advertising campaign on TV/Magazines/the net

It wasn't until a much needed price cut happened and Nintendo's answer to Call of Duty started coming out that shit began moving units

Likewise with the Wii U its main focus was strictly on the novelty controller as their way of making it stand out and not just be presented for what it was a fucking Wii that was a generation too late

If Nintendo does nothing but update the graphics then that's a disappointment, however if they actually work on adding new content then remaking WW was a grand idea. OoT was already remade, even recently on the 3DS. I kind of expect MM to be done on the 3DS as well.

What will sell for Nintendo is their brand name shit Pokemon/Mario and because they are so important like COD/Halo/Killzone they will be very careful of their major IP's and avoid any major changes unless its a spin off which they can slack off on and turn to shit since no one important would care so you're gonna get gauranteed sales by playing safe and repeating the same titles every year

1. Calling it "Wii" anything, an entirely new name would have been more compelling

It's the games. It doesn't matter if the system can run games flawlessly and 100x better than a PC, if there aren't games that people want, the system won't go any where. With Nintendo, people are GUARANTEED to get at least most of the following:

Dude the 360 got the jump AHEAD on the PS3 and grabbed markeshare before which gave it a lead and success on it. They were pushing for Halo 3 for ages in magazines and websites to hype it up and then when the PS3 launched with its games library of Talladega Nights nobody cared at the time. Do you fucking not remember Gamespot and Gamefaqs having Halo 3 shit all over it for a while?

It's a half-step console. It is based completely on the Wii. In no way is it a new series of console generation for Nintendo. They are starting a new cycle trend of consoles. Sony and Microsoft will follow suit soon enough.

There are too many electronic devices out now for people to put their attention into. Case and point tablets. Tablets, as sickening as it is, are becoming considered gaming devices thanks to the past successes mobile devices had. This shows you how Nintendo is actually once again, ahead of the pack.

Look at the XL editions of the DS's.

I bet by next year, if not this year's E3, Nintendo will announce a fully new stand alone console that incorporates a new level of mobile gaming that plays off of what they have already built on with the DS and WiiU.

Yes it makes a BIG difference, there's a reason why Microsoft rushed out those 360's to get ahead of the PS3 so they could grab in first. The problem was that because they did a rush the 360's themselves had dumb failure rates and you had RROD and shit overheating for ages. Read the fucking markets and signs, it's clear as fucking crystal if you have some logic.

No, they won't be releasing anything that soon.

The Wii U was a middle step to bridge the gap between the 'casual' crowd, one they pretty much created out of nothing, and the core market.
It's a way to bring as many of the 'casual' crowd along as possible while they still try and bring more focus on the core market.
It's still too early to determine its success or failure either way.

Yea, it would seem too soon, but you also have to remember we're in the era now where Apple can release 2 iPhone's and a iPad a year, and people treat it like a decade has passed in between.

Electronics are simply upgrading too fast for the 5+ year cycles of the past. Especially if (God forbid) Apple or Google try and jump into the market.

I consider the WiiU as like an iPhone #S. It's a quickie upgrade, for those who didn't catch the Wii, but those in the know realize something really good is going to follow soon.

That is incorrect. From the leaks that were essentially verified, we know that it's not remotely at that level. You're looking at the equivalent of, at best, a GDDR5 6850m.

You might be confusing it with the 720, which is speculated to have a more powerful direct 7800 series GPU.

I would say no, they sacrifice power for bc and decided not to go full social on everyone. The tech maybe lacking but at least they remember its about games.

What I saw at the ps4 conference was the constant need to want to emulate real life, to emulate movies, to emulate social networking. But I saw little need to want to make games. I saw a system that was ready to ditch another piece of their audience so they can make their system more multimedia. Trade bc and the ability to "supposedly" own software both physical and digital for streaming content where you will almost always need internet.

What I saw sony do was present to me a custom PC with a controller. But guess what I already have a PC. They also presented to me a social machine but I'd reckon my smart phone can do a just as good if not better job than ps4 at that too.

I wait till E3 for my final conclusion but as of now Ps4 doesn't seem really appealing to me.

But of course you know opinions.

They're getting a good amount from what we know is going to be released.

No, they created new engine's in general. Epic's engine wasn't even shown at its full potential yesterday like it was in the past. It was scaled down just like they said it could do with the Wii U.

Why because they wanted to build their own online system to their specifications instead of letting EA force Origin down their throat? Nintendo probably realized that the general consensus towards both EA and Origin is becoming increasingly negative, so it would be better for them to keep their name off the console. Besides it's not like EA has anything worthwhile to offer in terms of games.

They are already selling at a (slight) loss. They don't need to play the game Sony did with the PS2 (sell at huge loss, sell lots of consoles....over time not make enough money back to cover losses). Nintendo isn't in this game to go slowly bankrupt like Sony, nor do they have other huge parts of the company to bankroll the games division. They just make games and game hardware.

It's just not going to happen, hardware-wise. The PS4 will not be remotely powerful enough to emulate the PS3 in software, and including a cell would be too costly.

They MAY go the "if you have the disc in, we'll read the UID and stream it from our server while saving the game locally".

For Japan Only, of course. Americans/Euros would have to buy again.

Maybe, but I was thinking more along the lines of what they have now. They have PS+ and a few media streaming services that are subscription based, so I could see them adding more stuff like that, but if they just started charging for things that are generally considered basic features I suspect there would be a lot of backlash.

I've tested it with Crash Course in Nintendoland and other games. Just holding the trigger down, it randomly drops the press. That is damned inexcusable for a controller I can't easily replace.
