>>184164815But now with the advances in mobile phone technology and demand and competition for lighter, brighter and more pixel packed screens has driven the price of the items needed to such displays that are light enough for comfort, small enough for use and have enough pixel density to a point where such a device can be affordable to the average user.
As for the head tracking, I don't really see the use besides flight sims and the like but I would not go so far as to call it a gimmick.
Now as for the 3D as I had said before 3D in general has always been a sort of gimmick, less so with its' use of late but it is still lacking in function, which is in part where the OR comes in. What it uses is a separate screen for each eye, this allows the rift to display images in 3D as the brain would normally perceive them, un-like 3d movies or 3d games that have so far used steroscopic polarized lenses which can cause discomfort for some viewers.
I personally believe that on a PC 3D can thrive, because making a game with real depth perception can add many layers of polish onto a game.
But I think that It would be foolish to say that this is for vidya alone, this is not just a toy for people who play videogames it is the first really affordable stereoscopic head mounted display, an artist or designer may buy this so they can make 3D models more easily or someone may just want a nice virtual 3D cinima experience in their home.
